MangoBroccoli
I'm looking for recommendations for the best programs about the Second World War, preferably. I barely know anything about it but watched the BBC'S six part documentary about Auschwitz all in one day. I'd really like to watch a lot more, the only other series I have is The World At War (not watched yet) Or even war films such as Downfall. Anyone got some cracking recommendations? Thanks! Pride_of_the_Clyde
You needn't look any further than what you've already got - The World At War is possibly the best thing ever broadcast.
Dariusz
The World At War is a magnificent watch. IMHO the best series ever put on your tellybox. Assume you've seen Band of Brothers?. I usually make a point of watching it back to back at least once a year. The Pacific is another decent series, but is based on the US/Japan part of the war, which I dont have such a big interest in. I tend to download random documentaries about concentration camps....suppose it depends how you er "get your stuff". I just google Auschwitz, Belsen....that kind of thing, and random programmes usually pop up Film-wise, Come And See is pretty good, although its not an easy watch. I also enjoyed Defiance, Enemy At The Gates, The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, Saints and Soldiers, The Pianist and Uprising, to name but a few. tamthebam
"Das Boot" about a German U-boat crew is very good, albeit a drama.

MangoBroccoli
I've seen and loved Band of Brothers. Because I'm a bit lazy I've always found it easier to watch dramatisations and films rather than documentaries, although I recently watched something about Hitler's rise to power, think it was called Hitler in Colour and broadcast on Channel 4 last year. That piqued my interest. I probably know the least about the War(s) out of everyone in my family even though I've travelled all through Germany and am the only one to have seen Auschwitz first hand. I feel like it's time to take more of an active interest, in all aspects, from the scheming and politics of Hitler's rise to the concentration camps and the Russian retaliation. It's all fascinating to me

Kilbowie's Finest
Not necessarily about the war itself but if you are looking for a great documentary series detailing Hitler and The Nazis rise to power and the results of their actions I would heartily recommend this BBC Series from 1997 - fascinating series. Savage Henry
Not a TV series, I know, but William Shirer's The Rise and Fall of The Third Reich is pretty much essential reading as it presents the war from the German side, albeit an American journalist's view of the German side. It's about 1500 pages long, so the audio book version is a good purchase!

tongue_tied_danny
There was a documentary series about the cold war, with a similar format to The World At War. Well worth watching. Lofarl
I love reading and watching WW2 stuff. I have watched all the trashy shows on History channel, all the chinstroking ones on the BBC. Read more books about it than I can care to mention, been to some historic places of the war. Plenty of WW2 stuff on youtube. This here is the best documentary you will ever ever see on Stalin. Utter brute https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRlOt-wqFHY Hitler and Chamberlain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFlsYffrTF0 There was another great on by Prof David Reynolds that I cant find on youtube. Shame I like his stuff. I would urge you to watch these two.
Lofarl
Triumph of the will. Hitler assumes his quest to become the ultimate baddie. Truly worth watching if you want to understand the Nazi regime and how millions feel under its spell Third Reich, The Rise. Lots of great home footage of people just going about their lives in Hitlers Germanyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppk_6Q5DTTM
