Morton v Spartans

Recommended Posts

I expect that this is the first ever meeting between the clubs, certainly in a competitive game anyway. Are many heading through from Edinburgh for the game?

Spartans probably couldn't play us a better time, we've signed almost a completely new squad this summer, which will still be bedding in. You would still hope that we have enough up our sleeves to see off a Lowland League side, with the utmost respect to Spartans, but it's a funny old game, and stranger things have happened.

Hopefully a comfortable home here, but it's Morton we're talking about so it has the potential to be a banana skin.

Caraux

Kilday Crighton Milojevic Lamie

McKee Hands Miller Allan

Barrowman McNeil

4-0 - Barrowman x2, McKee and Hands.

We've done a fair bit of rebuilding too over the summer with 6 new signings.

There will be a few of us coming through, sadly normally I do a lot of the organising of travel but I've been on holiday.

Really looking forward to the trip though. Should be a good day out!!

That starting XI isn't encouraging. If we don't sign another four or five players - and by the sounds of it we'll be lucky to get two - this looks like being a terrible season. Confidence level: 2001/02.

Don't think you will see Hands start as he is still struggling with his fitness following his problems of last season. More likely to be O'Ware in midfield again. I don't know if Lamie is available again or not. If he is it would be a pick between him and Allan for left back with Mark Russell being a shoe in for left mid.

Hands played 85 minutes in the bounce game with Celtic on Wednesday, so he might be a lot closer to a start now. Fingers crossed that Bachirou is back in the team tomorrow, as we really shouldn't need to play with 2 sitting midfielders, and I imagine that O'Ware and Miller won't do a lot of getting forward.

3-1 win for Morton in what will be a tough slog against a side who will fight for every ball. Would imagine that our fitness will show in the last 20 minutes which should be enough to see us win.

According to the Telegraph, Fred has not trained all week and is very doubtful. Pepper is still out with his knee injury and its a worry that he seems to have missed the whole of pre season. I hope we have not signed an injury dud!

Also according to the Telegraph we have two French front men on trial and one or both may feature in the match - presumably off the bench?

I suspect the team will be:

Gaston/Careaux 50:50 choice

Kilday Crichton Milojevic Lamie (apparently fit again)

McKee Millar O'Ware Russell

McNeil

Barrowman

That team looks absolutely fucking rancid, we have had a joke preseason yet again.

Wouldn't be surprised to see extra time in this one; would be surprised if we won by several goals.

So we're looking at two centre backs in central midfield again? Aye, brilliant. If we're going to have that regularly throughout this season then it's going to be even worse than expected.

I don't think we will see that very often if Bachirou and Hands are fit, those two must surely be the first choices? I did see that Michael Miller apparently had an excellent game in midfield against St Mirren, so he may well make one of those places his own, leaving Bachirou, Hands and McKee to fight it out for the other place, as I would think that Pepper is Duffy's choice at right midfield.

Bit of a pisser starting the season with a patchword squad, and still needing 2-3 players minimum, but it is what it is.

Replace McKee with Knight and we can just play with 2 back 4s, one right in front of the other.

Regardless of how it looks on paper, from what I've seen of our new-look team so far, the negativity of some fans is totally OTT. After a 1-0 defeat to a settled St Mirren team 2 leagues above us, heard one fan just repeating "terrible" over and over again. However, on that note, we are still Morton and the players are still gelling (to tired that cliche yet further), so still plenty of room for things to go disastrously wrong.

In the grand scheme of things, then, a win here is more important for the morale of the fans than for the club itself - a defeat would surely see our attendance drop to below 0...
