Nice of you to encourage the youngsters.

Aye but have you ever heard the coaches or the parents of the youngsters yelling at them from the sidelines? It is a disgrace and no wonder why our players can't even trap a ball at times.

What's the criteria to get into the national development league. Curious how some lower league teams are in there.

Because we're better than you :D

In all seriousness the rules are here

Essentially it comes down to your academy rating, if you have recently played in the premiership and if the board likes you.

Further to wilkinson1998 post, you are allowed 5 overage players.

Thanks, personally I didn't see anything wrong with the reserve league but hopefully this works out well with plenty progress made

At least you'll get a game against Rangers, Hearts, Hibs and Falkirk this season. Sounds like the SPFL have thrown you a crumb :)

Its more or less the reserve league with a different name. As mentioned you can play 5 players over 20 so I would imagine that most sides would field their subs from the weekend 1st team game and youngsters which was what we pretty much done in the reserve league.

Depends how each team treat it though would imagine it will be treated by most as a reserve league were players not getting a game or on the bench for the first team will play. If this is the case it's not really going to help the younger lads after U17 progress as they wont get much competitive football.

I would imagine we'll usually treat it as the u20 side with perhaps Jim Atkinson and the senior apprentices (Smith, Smith and Hooper, probably Slattery also) thrown in. That's largely what we did with the reserve league last season. Other than occasional easing back from injury situations the senior "subs" didn't figure in the midweek reserves. Dzierzawski played a few times, and Orsi when he was with us but most didn't. In effect the 19's mostly played two games a week last season which was too much really so this arrangement will suit us better.

Suppose we will have to wait & see though if they do decide to treat it as you think & only use say maybe Jim & 5 senior apprentices that leaves 5 other places free. I don't know but guess the U19/20 squad has around at least 14 players, therefore that would leave around 9 players without a competitive game every week. I am sure they would rather be playing 2 games a week like last season rather than none. And that's if the team doesn't include any first teamers or players coming back from injury.

There are 18 in the u20 squad though some are still at school and working round that and there is always likely to be one or two injured.

Tend to agree we are going to need to wait and see how it works out but if they are not playing enough then we can always organise friendlies. There are always teams looking for a game and the advantage of that approach is if you struggle for a squad some weeks you dont have to arrange a game.
