Scottish Junior Cup - club performance index

Having a bit too much time on my hands I've made an attempt at producing a performance index of clubs in the Scottish Junior Cup over the past 5 seasons. I intend to update it at the completion of each round in the future.

The index is attached.

----

For geeks interested in how I calculated the index

Each win earns the following number of points

Round 1 victory - 10

Round 2 victory - 11

Round 3 victory - 12

Round 4 victory - 13

Round 5 victory - 14

Round 6 victory - 15

SF Victory - 16

Final victory - 17

(teams which progress as a result of their opponent scratching or because of an appeal do not earn any points.)

These points are cumulative so a team winning in round 1 and then being eliminated earns 10 points. A team winning the cup (and playing in round 1) earns 108 points

The index covers the last 5 seasons. It is weighted so that performances in more recent seasons earn more points than in earlier seasons.

The weights I settled on are

current season - 60

current season-1 50

currrent season-2 40

current season-3 30

current season-4 20

So a team winning the cup (and playing in round 1) would earn 108*60 (6480) points in the current season. A team winning the cup (and playing in round 1) in the earliest season covered by the index would earn 108*20 (2160) points.

The total number of points that could be earned by a team winning the cup in all 5 seasons (and playing in Round 1 is (108*20)+(108+30)+108*40)+(108*50)+(108*60) = 21600. Each club's total points is then multiplied by (1000/21600) to give an index with 1000 being the highest possible score.

As a continuing project I will update the table at the end of each round in the future. When Round 1 2014-15 is completed Round 1 2009-10 will drop out of the calculations and the highest weight of 60 will apply to Round 1 2014-15 and Rounds 2-Final 2013-14 etc.

What is the purpose of weighting over such a relatively short period? With that degree of weighting it won't be long before you're as well discounting anything more than 5 years old - if you keep the thing running. Unless it's an ongoing "last 5 seasons" with the oldest dropping off? In which case, weighting makes less sense for a relatively short window. Bo'ness have got a really consistent record in the last 5 seasons but the weighting doesn't feel right if a club like the Rose has won the thing and reached the final in 2 of the last 5 seasons and that record positions them 100s of points behind.

The boy's done well to put the thing together for 5 seasons. What does it matter how long it was over? As long as everyone knows the scoring system used then they know what it's based on. It's obviously a gauge of consistency. If you want a gauge of cup winning success then count the stars on the club shirts.

The five year thing makes it like the euro coefficient system?

Edit: another snippet that might be of interest is that the top north region club is Culter in 54th place, followed by Deveronside in 68th and Hermes in 71st.

The coefficient system takes into account the last five years - there is no weighting

the fifa world rankings have a similar weighting system

Perhaps you missed this.

"When Round 1 2014-15 is completed Round 1 2009-10 will drop out of the calculations and the highest weight of 60 will apply to Round 1 2014-15 and Rounds 2-Final 2013-14 etc."

FIFA also weights the results from the previous 5 seasons.

Linlithgow won the Cup in the most distant season covered - soon to disappear from the index! In three of the five seasons covered they failed to win a single game in one, and won just a single tie in each of the other two.

Over the 5 seasons Bo'ness won 22 ties and Linlithgow 15.

I am considering changing the weighting. Currently it is 20-30-40-50-60 (FIFA uses 20-40-60-80-100). I might favour a tighter weighting 20-25-30-35-40 so that results in season 5 have double the weight in season 1 compared to 3 times the weight at present (With FIFA it is 5 times the weight).

I'm surprised we got in the top 60!

We've not had much luck in the draw in the early rounds in the last five years, drawing Talbot (away), Linlithgow Rose (away),Bonnyrigg Rose (away), Bathgate (away), Glenafton (away) and Irvine Meadow (away). ..........maybe a bit luckier next time!
