Luis Suarez

Starting a new topic because this story is going to run and run.

FIFA's own report on the game doesn't even mention it.

And it'll be a good place to find the gifs and pics.

Here is Paddy Power's latest.

Why is biting seen as so awful? The hysteria over it is worse than if he broke somebody's leg. Chiellini probably doesn't even have a bruise.

Probably due to the fact that biting someone requires a degree of thought or premeditation. Breaking someones leg is most often an accidental consequence of bad judgement or poor timing.

Not if you're Roy Keane! Bad tackles are often premeditated.

* not to be understood as a defence of biting people.

You can go out and play a game of football and know that if something goes wrong, you may get a serious injury, even if it isn't intentional.

No-one walks onto a pitch and thinks "Today might be the day I get bitten".

How about spitting? No harm done. Racism? Sticks and stones etc....

Spitting gets a similar reaction, and is even more harmless. Must be something to do with being shocked by anything involving bodily fluids. Football will be banned for ever when a striker takes a dump sitting on a defender.

From Fifa.

"FIFA can confirm that disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the player Luis Suarez of Uruguay following an apparent breach of art. 48 and/or art. 57 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code during the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ match Italy-Uruguay played on 24 June 2014. The player and/or the Uruguayan FA are invited to provide with their position and any documentary evidence they deem relevant until 25 June 2014, 5pm, Brasilia time.

According to art. 77 lit. a of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), the FIFA Disciplinary Committee is responsible for sanctioning serious infringements which have escaped the match officials’ attention. Furthermore, according to art. 96 of the FDC, any type of proof may be produced (par. 1), in particular are admissible, reports from referees, declarations from the parties and witnesses, material evidence, audio or video recordings (par. 3)."

That would be 9pm tonight.

We should know quite quickly what ban, if any, he'll get because the next Uruguay game against Colombia is on Saturday.

Often? I'd say that tackles which set out to injure an opponent are incredibly rare.

Depends what we're talking about here. I think that it's very rare that a player tries to seriously injure an opponent. I don't actually think it's common that players try to injure opponents at all. On the other hand, it's quite common for a player to leave a foot in, look for a bit of revenge for a previous tackle, or hurt a player to let him know that he's in a game. They might not be trying to seriously injure them, but they certainly want to hurt them (mostly in the heat of the moment, of course).

In a similar way Suarez wanted to hurt Chiellini, but I don't think he wanted to seriously injure him. Why he couldn't just rake his studs down his achilles like a normal player, I have no idea.
