Thailand

A few mates and I are heading out to Thailand at the end of the month for 16 days. All we've booked so far are the flights there and back as well as a place to stay for the first three nights in Bangkok.

From then on we were really just going to wing it a bit. Rough plans of down South to Koh Samui for a few days and Phuket for a bit. Last night will be back in Bangkok before we fly home.

Curfew has lifted now which is great.

Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated?

Only ever been to Bangkok. I made a thread about it last year, might be of some use

For that authentic Hangover 2 experience go here. Stunning views and a smart casual dress code.

For touristy stuff visit the many temples there. Its all clumped near each other. Temple of the reclining Budda is pretty ace. Soi Cowboy is the red light district and nearby is Nana Plaza for all your dirty desires. I never shagged over there as I was convinced I'd end up with a tranny...You cant tell. But seeing as your from Fife, that shouldn't phase you :P

We never went to Phuket or Koh Phi Phi sadly.

Bangkok is great for a couple of days but you will be glad to get out of there, ridiculous heat and so many people everywhere! Samui is nice, Koh Pagnan is good if theres a full moon Koh Tao was the best for me, did my diving there and would thoroughly recommend that if you get the chance.

Went to Hui Hin as well but thought it was pish, full of old b*****ds looking for hookers

I went to Phuket for four days over new year just past. We really didn't make the most of the place during the day as we were mostly hungover.

But we did go karting which would illegal over here. The fastest go karts I've been on in my life. We also went to the gun range but we only lasted 10 minutes as we felt so uncomfortable.

Beaches were lovely and cracking weather. Place stunk most of the time, think it was down to the drainage.

First day we got there we went to a massage place and ended up getting a happy ending. It was pretty awkward to be honest and I only did it once.

The nightlife is unreal though, plenty of bars on the main strip and two big buildings with hundreds of mini bars with about half a dozen hookers on them. If you wanted to get a hooker from the bar, you had to pay the bar, pay the hooker then pay the hotel if you wanted to pump one of them.

Food is pretty cheap but drink prices are similar to ours back here. It's only the same price as here as it's a touristy resort you're in. Cheap as chips if you go out into the countryside so I'm lead to believe.

You can fire a RPG at a cow for a grand if that's your thing. I'm sure you can also AK47 a whole bunch of Chickens too. So if you feel a bit Jeffrey Dhamerish you have a outlet there.

Turns out this is actually in Cambodia.

Just back from three weeks in Thailand and I can safely say that it is the best place that I've visited so far. We were slightly apprehensive beforehand due to the military coup and the curfew - not helped by a scaremongering blogger called Richard Barrow on Twitter who nearly single-handedly caused us to rearrange our trip - but we needn't have worried at all. We were quite fortunate with timings as the curfew was conveniently lifted a couple of days before we arrived at each new place but for the first two nights in Bangkok when we arrived, it was still in force and we experienced no problems - we stayed out on Khao San Road until 4am on the first night and 2am on the second.

As mentioned, we spent the first two nights in Bangkok and then flew to Phuket where we immediately got the boat over to Koh Phi Phi to spend three nights. We all thought it would be quite a chilled out couple of nights before the madness of Phuket and Koh Phangan; how wrong we were. Brilliant beach parties that lasted until 3 or 4 in the morning and buckets (actual beach buckets) of bevvy. Can recommend the Reggae Bar where you can fight fellow tourists in a Muay Thai ring, the Irish Bar and also the Banana Bar although don't get too hammered in there because there's a spiral staircase which is very difficult to get down after a bucket. You can get a long boat over to Koh Phi Phi Leh which is where The Beach was filmed; it takes a couple of hours though and the long boats aren't the most comfortable. Mosquito bites were a bit of a problem over there so take loads of repellent.

From there, we went back to Phuket where we stayed in Patong Beach for three nights. Bangla Road is hands-down my favourite street in the world. The Tiger Bar is like a big B&Q warehouse full of bars, strippers and hookers with a nightclub upstairs where you can find a lot of normal Thai folk. There's one pole dancer with a massive tattoo on her back who defies the laws of gravity by swinging around this pole at all sorts of angles. Fabulous place. We went to the shooting range and the tiger kingdom once our hangovers had worn off which was cool. The rest of the time in Phuket was spent reassuring one of my mates that he didn't have AIDS.

We then flew from Phuket to Koh Samui and again immediately sailed over to Koh Phangan for five nights. We stayed in a villa in a place called the Coast Resort and it was terrific; ocean view and you could walk straight out into the infinity pool, complete with pool side bar. We did a pool party at the Coral Bungalows which was like something out of Skins, the Jungle Party which I didn't expect to be as far into the jungle as it was but was still great and the Full Moon Party which was bonkers. Tremendous place.

We went back over to Koh Samui for four nights where we stayed in Chaweng Beach. Accomodation-wise, this was probably the poorest of the trip. We stayed in a four-and-a-half-star resort but it was really no better than a three and from speaking to a few different people, most of the hotels in Chaweng are roughly the same. However, the Ark Bar was excellent; pool parties from 2pm until 2am, football on numerous screens, loads of tourists. The strip was decent enough, cheap buckets in the Viking Bar then Green Mango was the normal routine. There's also an excellent Italian called Duomo which is just off the main drag. There's an Ice Bar too if you're looking for a bit of novelty but it wasn't great plus the drinks included in the price were pretty much fruit juice. Should also do some of your shopping in Samui - we held off as we had heard that Bangkok was better but it was like trying to find a needle in a haystack whereas in Samui, it was relatively easy.

From Koh Samui, we flew back up to Bangkok for a final two nights of luxury in a place called the Oriental Residence. We managed to get a good deal on it and it was easily the best hotel I've ever stayed in. They have a great restaurant on the ground floor called Cafe Claire and the food was outstanding; managed to have caviar as a starter which was unexpected but fantastic. Can also recommend the salmon and flat iron steak. We visited a few of the landmarks like the Golden Mountain and the Marble Palace but unless you're really into that sort of thing, I would probably give it a miss as once you've seen one, you've seen them all. We spent the last night in the Skybar at the Lebua where part of the Hangover 2 was filmed which has breathtaking views of Bangkok.

All in all, it was possibly the best three weeks of my life so far. A truly fantastic country with the most wonderful, friendly people you could ever wish to meet. Very much looking forward to going back.

Lebuas dear as f**k after being used to spending about 200 baht on drinks eh.

Caught me off guard when the bill came for a glass of wine and a bottle of singa. Went on the last night I was there though so had cash to use up anyway. It was probably worth it for the view to be fair though.

Anyone been to Thailand on a family holiday? Thinking of going next year with wife and son. Son will be 14 by then.

Your son will certainly love it! Maybe avoid Pattaya if you're taking the wife though.

Did this last year, pretty similar journey to Armand 2 and he's more or less got it spot on. Ko Phi Phi in particular is possibly the most visually beuatiful place I#ve ever been, outside Hamilton obviously.

Don't think he mentioned how he travelled around but you can get really cheap deals on AirAsia for instance, just look into the budget carriers. Travelling between the islands by noat is decent value. We took the bus across country to get from Phuket to KoH Samui boats and it was a bit hairy, the kind of thing you read about in the papers. Google maps said something like 5 hours and the guy done it in just over 3. Still, it's part of the experience. We also got the overnight train from Chumphon to Bangkok which was dirt cheap and pretty clean and comfortable.

Whatever you do you'll have a great time.

Thailand can be for families as well, you just stay in nicer resorts and do things like shopping, visit temples and the beach rather than Bangla Road and those bars that have no windows at Patpong. There's something for, literally, everyone.
