Aye get this comp to f**k. I heard the final hasn't been played from last year yet?

I agree with your first point and you are spot on with your second point, this would be decent if it was all played in one pre-season

Date of Stenhousemuir - Stirling Albion 1st round match confirmed as Tuesday 29 July 2014, according to Albion's website.

If Stirling were to win this year's final against Falkirk the week before and then lose to Stenny, it would presumably be one of the shortest reigns as champions. Does anyone [i.e. Hibee Jibee?] know if anyone has ever been knocked out of one year's tournament before they went out (or won) the previous year's?

Stirlingshire Cup has always been fairly well-run, with few held-over ties and these normally played quickly, so this has never happened... From what I can see there's never been a preceding edition's tie played after a following edition's tie at all.

By far the closest was last year:

2012-13

held-over Final... Tue 23rd July 2013... Dumbarton 3-2 Falkirk

2013-14

first tie played - Wed 31st July 2013 (R1: Stenhousemuir 0-1 Falkirk)

Dumbarton eliminated at Falkirk in SF on Tue 24th September 2013, 3-1

Anyone think this would be better if it was a pre-season tournament at a neutral place carried out over a weekend, a bit like the Oban Tournament?

Teams could bring their first team and youth teams and play whoever they like for each game, the fans get a weekend somewhere with plenty football to watch and each tournament would be completed pre-season instead of the current stringing out over more than a year.

That sounds like a decent proposal as I think it would be a shame if they done away with it all together.

The Stirlingshire is one of the oldest tourneys in Scottish fitba and has long served as a beneficial means of getting players up to speed for the latest season. Also, the cup itself is a cracker.

This wouldn't work as well as oban, oban is free entry and you can take drink in I think

It was run as a pre season tournament for a few years in the 80s. No idea why they abandoned that. Personally I'd rather keep the Stirlingshire Cup than the Challenge Cup
