Barcelona

It appears as if myself and one other will be heading to Barcelona for just a couple nights in the middle of August.

I was just wondering if any of the P&Bers who have visited Barcelona could recommend any hotels to stay in and things that are worth checking out in the city.

Thanks!

Been over a few times smurph mainly for the grand prix,i normally stay close to the main station for ease of travel(circuit is around 45mins train out of the city)

Great underground system in the city for getting about so when you arrive if you get the train into the city get a 10 journey ticket(cost 10 euro30 that was 2 weeks ago price) and that usually lasts me a w/end no probs and that includes the train out to/from the airport.Other option is to catch the bus from the airport to placa de catalunya which is basically at the top of las rambalas if your hotel is around there, never done it but it cost 2 euro(signs everywhere in the airport)

Probably overpriced but id do the hop on hop off tour of the city to get your bearings theres so much to see and this will give you a good idea of which places you want to check out for longer(goes past camp nou/gaudis church etc etc)

For food if you want to treat yourself theres some top notch eateries in placa de espanya,if you see the converted bullring theres an elevator that goes up and costs 1 euro and you get a cracking picture shot and theres some really nice restaurants up there and they reimburse your euro elevator journey if you eat in any of them

For drinking obviously las rambalas ifs the place but its really overpriced tourist rubbish,if you go up by passage de garcia(10 min walk)theres loads of bars/clubs open all night at weekend

i know ive mentioned a few place names but they arent that far apart and barca is pretty well signposted and also if espanyol are at home i went up to there last game at osasuna a couple of weeks ago and had a pretty dece time

Cracking city and making my return there in September. Doulikefish has covered everything but I can't recommend Guadi Park enough. Quite an uphill treck (even with the outdoor escalator) but totally worth it.

Food wise I can't remember the name or locations of the best places I ate so I'm no good there, however just by looking at places you can sort the shit from the decent.

Use a business hotel. In August they are cheaper.

I love HCC Open and Ayre Hotel Gran Via for location.

Avoid Las ramblas and stay in the (Gracia) area Gracia is considered the "classy part"of Barca and is Central .

Las Ramblas is heaving with Gypos n thieves .

So just check tripadvisor for a good hotel in the Gracia area and you wont be sorry, make sure you go to Guadis Sacred Familia ..breathtaking. ..been many times any Qs ..pm me.

We've been to Barcelona every year for about nine years. Catedral (not surprisingly near the cathedral) is a lovely hotel but expensive. Last three years we have booked at the Universal near bottom of Paral-lel; going there again next year. Only 10 minute walk from Ramblas and the port with the added benefit of a metro station just outside the door. Use the metro, it's pretty cheap and great for getting around.

Do not miss the Magic Fountain display, I think it's on every evening in the summer.

Don't bother with the waxworks at the foot of the Ramblas. Half of them you won't recognise, the other half are so crap that you won't recognise them without reading their placard.

I did manage to feel up Helen of Troy which wasn't all doom and gloom.

Obviously watch out for muggers etc. I got my phone stolen outside a club (basically some c**t knocked me to the ground and ran off while I was still in a daze). Not only did he have my phone, he ran up a £200 bill phoning a premium rate number in the Northern Marianas Islands before I could cancel it.

Thanks for all the information gents, very helpful!

Looking likely that we'll be there 14th-17th August.

Has anyone went for a tour of the Camp Nou? Is it worth checking out?

Yeah it's pretty enjoyable. Plus the sheer scale of the place is immense.

Yeah I was thinking of going, but I'm with a non-football fan and was worried that he'd just spend a couple of hours bored out his mind.

Did that last year. Was quite interesting although we went the day before they played Real Madrid (bad planning!) so a few bits were closed off.

The other stadium tours I've been on you have a guide who takes you round. There you're just left to wander round the museum, dressing room and whatever other bits they let you in. Dunno if you could get a handheld audio guide mind you.

Instead of doing a bus tour, do a free walking tour. It's aimed at younger people and is pretty interesting and informative. It allows you to get a good grasp of the city if you've never been there before. You should leave a tip at the end, but I got a lot more out of it than I would have doing a bus tour and it turns out far cheaper. They also do a pub crawl and a tapas tour which is pretty cool for seeing parts of the city and meeting other people your age. The company I did it with was Sandemans new Europe.

Other folk have covered pretty much everything else. Enjoy.

You're not going with cafe match from Grindr are you? You're a smooth operator if you've bagged it that quickly.....

Unfortunately not, no!

Please, I've seen us win both a Championship AND a Challenge Cup. 8)

Just returned through the night from a School trip. We stayed just off at La Ramblas and I have to admit to not feeling particularly threatened by pickpockets. Lovely city although the weather wasn't ideal for this time of year. Could happily sit down at the port with a few beers people watching in the sun all day.
