Anyone been? Thoughts? I fancy heading to Lithuania and then heading south to Belarus.

More over, which is the best/cheapest way flights wise? I would like to leave from Scotland realistically but I suppose it's not a major hassle if I need to fly from England.

I've been over for the two Scotland games in 2006 and 2010. First time we flew to Riga and then got the bus (4 hours or so) and second time flew to Kaunas and bus from there (1 hour).

Because it was a football trip spent most of the time drinking, but the old town is pretty nice from what I remember and the actual city centre is pretty compact. I remember some folk went to the KGB / genocide museum which is pretty grim but good if you're interested in that sort of thing.

In 2006 it was the first place I discovered pear cider, so it'll always be fondly remembered. It was pretty cheap and still will be I'd imagine as outside the euro.

I've been three times when I was going out with a Lithuanian girl. Haven't been for about four years now but absolutely loved it. I flew fairly cheaply from Edinburgh to Kaunas then bus to Vilnius twice and once from Aberdeen via Copenhagen to Vilnius which was fairly expensive.

Weather is good in the summer months and the local beer is excellent and fairly cheap. As Fucti says yer £ goes a long way, especially if you stay off some of the more central/touristy places. The bohemian "Republic of Užupis" is a good for a wander.

The Old Town is beautiful and would recommend taking the stroll up to Gediminas Tower for some stunning views. The TV Tower also also offers some quality views as well as some bullet holes in the wall where the Russians opened fire during their independence campaign. The locals tend to be big Basketball fans so if your trip is lucky enough to coincide with a game paying a visit to the Siemens Arena to see Lietuvos Ryta is also a quality experience. If you're venturing out of the city Traki is a beautiful, if genteel, collection of lakes and castles that harks back Lithuania's past.

The local meat filled pastries are delightful and there's also a random Frank Zappa statue in central Vilnius.

More importantly the women are generally amazing.

You could always get a cheapo to stockholm and ferry to estonia and then bus it down,as for Belarus there is a direct train service to Warsaw which is fun as it stops to change the track gauge at the border which is a bit of a novelty but remember you will need a visa but easily obtained.Minsk is like stepping back in time though

Aye they change the wheels on the train going from Poland to Ukraine.

I know someone who lives in Hrodno (north west Belarus) and that is only 5 hours or so on the bus from Vilnuis so will make that my start point before heading to Minsk.

That route sounds ideal GJ, more places I see the better and 60 miles is nothing really.

Cheers for the info guys.

Did you enjoy your trip?

Aye, it was brilliant. Lovely city, friendly people, great food, excellent pubs. Definitely going to return at some point, I'm thinking on doing the three Baltic capitals in one trip. My Lithuanian is absolutely shite though.

Edit: World Basketball Championships were on while I was there too, incredible atmosphere in the pubs for that. Unfortunately they lost both games I saw so didn't get to witness any SCENES.

Good to hear bud, I always rave about the place if folk ask.

Mine was pretty shite too, I'm not much of linguist anyway but is was hard to pick up. Although like most languages please and thank you get you a long way.

Aye, i was over during the Olympics a few years ago when they medaled, that was scenetastic.

Few years since of been over though, thinking of something similar next year doing Riga/Kaunas/Vilnuis/Zaokpane in a week or ten days.

Vilnius to Zakopane is insanely long, needs broken up with Warsaw (even for just a day) and, being en-route, Krakow. Poland doesn't seem even remotely as huge as it is when you need to get somewhere in it.

Kaunas is also by at least some accounts a bit of a bin.

Definitely, the gf is if from Kielce, which is about half way between Krakow and Warsaw, planning stopping off there for a night or two. Never been to Zakopane but she raves about the place.

Had heard that about Kaunas, just it's the only point if interest in Lithuania I've never been to. Most of their urban areas are reasonably grim, especially compared to Vilnuis. Might end up just doing Riga>Vilnuis>Kielce>Zako with 2 nights in each.
