Dubrovnik

A few of my pals from uni and myself are planning on going a wee jaunt in the summer as one final "blowout" before graduation. We've mentioned a few places like Prague, Warsaw and Berlin, but at least some of us have done those places before. Dubrovnik has been mentioned more and more often recently but we don't know much about it. Has anyone here ever been? What is it like? Is it pricey? Any information on it will be welcome!

Cheers.

I was there about seven years ago on a wider tour of Croatia and other parts of the former Yugoslavia. It certainly wasn`t expensive at that time, but I assume things might have changed over the intervening years.

The whole Dalamatian coast is just a wonderful place to go. Dubrovnik, Sibenik and my personal favourite Split. The islands are absolutely stunning, Hvar is not to be missed. I traveled down from Split to Dubrovnik by bus(you actually go through a small part of Bosnia as well), then back up through the islands by ferry.

How long have you got? If it`s say even a week, I`d recommend Dalamtia as a whole rather than just sticking to Dubrovnik. If just a long weekend then there`s still plenty to keep you occupied. It`ll be busy with tourists in summer, but that`s the same for most places. The weather can get pretty damn hot. Also in my opinion I`ve never seen better looking woman on the planet than Dalmatian girls, certainly not hounds!

Not got any experience of the airport or how far out it is, as I`ve already mentioned I was on part of a larger tour.

The road from the airport is like something out of Top Gear. Drink and food prices are OK, not dirt cheap but not bad. There isn't much traditional Croation food, they seem to be like Italians in their taste. Beer and wine are brilliant. There are lots of wee resorts just outside the city as well.

Where drink gets really cheap is the supermarket. I really liked it. Don't mention the war, I did once but I think I got away with it.

I can only agree with what's being said. In terms of price, yeah whilst not expensive, it's roughly the same as here, probably a little under. It does indeed get bloody hot, hit 40 degrees in August when I was there. It is a stunning place and there is plenty to see and do around.

As said all of the islands are fantastic, we never did Hvar, but it's meant to be the best of the lot, not that the ones we did were bad.

I certainly wouldn't spend a whole week there. There's so much more to see in Croatia than just Dubrovnik. Think I must have done the same bus journey as Desert Nomad, beautiful drive so it was.

I absolutely loved it, but then the 3 days we were there felt enough and tbh if you're wanting to do some serious drinking it's not the right place compared to others. If on the other hand you want to wander about in a beautiful surrounding, have a laugh in the sun and eat and drink some top notch stuff, it's brilliant.

Used to go there quite regularly with work.

Take an hour long walk around the city walls for some fantastic views of the harbour, then go into the old town for some fine Croatian beer and the best ice cream I've ever tasted.

The ice cream in Croatia is indeed superb! It was actually up in Zagreb I discovered the best ice cream shop in the world. Beats Largs, Broughty Ferry et al hands down.

It's because it's Italian based in origin and theirs is consistently the best by far. Some of the flavours are excellent, Tiramisu is a favourite, getting pished from the amaretto by eating ice cream is brilliant.*

*slight exaggeration

Going here next week for a few days and looking forward to Game of Thrones tour as well as a day trip to Montenegro to the bay of Kotor.

Any hidden gems that are must see/places to go? Had a look at TripAdvisor for all the main ones but Pie and Bov regulars always have a few cheeky ideas?

If you like wine, D'Vino was a great place to spend the afternoon.

When you walk around the walls, at the ocean side, there's a bar you can see perched on the rocks. You have to walk through the maze of houses to get to it as you can't walk down from the walls. If you can be bothered to find it, it's a great place to have a beer and watch the sun go down.

Just back from a three night trip here. Is it just me that felt a bit underwhelmed? I was half joking when I said before I went there that it's not exactly a ringing endorsement of a holiday location when the main point of interest is a brick wall.

Lovely views around the harbour and the restaurants were good, but the whole place felt like a bit of a tourist trap and the best bits really involved jaunts outside the city itself. It's also not cheap by the standards of the Balkans (or at any rate I found it noticeably more expensive than Belgrade and Zagreb) and certainly more expensive than other popular tourist locations in Central and Eastern Europe like Prague or Budapest.

We stayed in an Airbnb apartment in the Old Town itself which was better than staying outside and going in. Good weather, enjoyed a day trip to the slightly quieter Cavtat.

Heard better things about Split. Wouldn't stay in Dubrovnik more than about 3 nights unless I was really into the water-based activities like the parasailing/jet skiing.

When we went to Croatia we stayed near Split and travelled down for a day in Dubrovnik. It was a long, beautiful drive and we had a good day walking the walls and looking around the Old Town before getting the cable car up the hill.

We found plenty to do around Split, which is also a fantastic city.

Spent yesterday and today in Dubrovnik and personally I prefer split. Absolute tourist trap. Have to run a gauntlet of tour operators trying to shove flyers in your face before you even get into the old town. Granted, it's stunning but the best part of £20 to climb the city walls? Get tae f**k

Much as I've liked it, it's underwhelmed me and I much preferred Split which incidentally is far, far cheaper too
