FlyerTon
Not sure why there's not been that much of an outcry about the apparent shrinking of Scotland on TV weather graphics in the last ten years. If the Scots reduced the size of England on the graphics I'm sure there would be an outcry. In fact England and Wales apparently look bigger than they are compared to Scotland. Example of this below **************************************************************************************************************** *************************************************************************************************************** Correctly sized map below To give you an example Scotland is almost 4 times the size of Wales but appears almost the same size in the top weather graphic. Scotland: 30,414 sq mi Wales: 8,022 sq mi
thisGRAEME
Someone needs to get the cartographers for social equality involved.
ForzaDundee
I don't particularly care however it is something that should be fixed. Would like to see the seethe from those down south if the map was presented from this perspective for a one-off.
Hedgecutter
Who cares anyway. Unlike the South, we're the ones with the country actually getting bigger and not disappearing into the sea. Isostatic Uplift FTW.

Scary Bear
I'll be writing to my MP about this. He only has one good eye, so the near and far away thing is possibly a problem for him, so I'm fairly sure he'll take up the fight. Weathermen are all paedos. Actually, it was just the one, wasn't it. This is probably down to him. The bad egg that he is.

th1stleandr0se
It's an English obesity problem. In reality it's because they're getting much more weather than we are.
Swarley
Not sure why there's not been that much of an outcry about the apparent shrinking of Scotland on TV weather graphics in the last ten years... There was outrage, in 2005 when they first introduced the map. But pretty much everyone decided there were far more important things to get their kinickers in a twist about than a map. Besides in an independent Scotland you can guarantee that the map of Scotland will fill your entire screen. Outraged Scots are "outraged"
Vacamion
If they showed it in proper scale and still had to fit Shetland in, would it not be mostly sea?

scottsdad
Maps are funny. Take a Peter's Projection map of the world for instance: Looks wrong, doesn't it? You're more used to seeing maps like this: Why the difference? Well, in truth Africa is 14 times larger than Greenland. On the bottom map they're almost the same size. Also, northern, developed countries were traditionally shown as larger than they really were. So, Scotland suffers by being northern and over developed compared to England
CityDave
We shouldn't have to put up with this obvious London bias on weather charts. An independent Scotland will have no weather, just like the Republic of Ireland. Flooding problems solved.
mikebhoy123
I'm glad someone has mentioned this as I've thought that Scotland was the wrong size before - so it's not just my paranoia Scottsdad - another funny thing about maps.... We are used to seeing the UK in the middle of the map - I used to work overseas all the time and remember being in Singapore and looking at a map on the wall - Singapore was in the middle !! Just looked weird !!!! We invented the world - we should be in the middle
Unleash The Nade
The whole of the UK is shrinking. Even the weatherman are bigger than it these days
FlyerTon
This is a genuine 'space' picture of the UK (apart from the Northern Isles). Snow scene from Jan 2010. From the NASA Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer satellite (MODIS) Edit to add: Higher res image on the link. Clicking on that then clicking again to zoom, some areas snow free (like Cumbrae) http://wordpress.mrreid.org.nyud.net:8090/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/uk-snow-january-2010-large.jpg

AyrshireTon
Is this not all down to the places nearer the poles being stretched out when put on a map? It's like cutting a ball open and trying to stretch it into a rectangle - it all has to look as wide as the equator so the north and south bits get artificially widened. Greenland is a lot narrower than maps make it look.
