Bought one of these from amazon, not been released yet over here.

I think it's worth the money if you don't have a smart TV, it can broadcast youtube/netflix to your TV from a tablet (can be apple or android) and also broadcast a chrome browser tab straight to your TV.

I tried sky sports and it had no sound and the quality was terrible but hopefully more apps will be released for it.

Well worth £40.

I remember these coming out in the US and thinking it looked like an interesting idea. I have to confess, I didnt really read up that much about how it works. Looks like a great idea though, but I think I'll wait till the UK specific version comes out.

I wouldnt hold your breath for a Sky compatible app for it, though. Sky have done everything they can to limit the ability of mobile devices to play their content on big TVs.

Thinking about getting one of these, anyone else got one yet?

Its good so far , use it mostly for Netflix and Google music. Starting to get more apps etc. New android KitKat has a cast screen on the menu now. Letting you cast webpages and other media. Only drawback is trying to get round the geolock stuff. Can't get it do cast American Netflix.

Best thing for folk with non smart TV so far I think.

£18 right now at a few places - Tesco, Amazon, Currys/PC World.

Use it all the time with Plex and stream stuff straight from my PC via my tablet casting to TV.

Great find :) If you want one you might have to hurry, Amazon werent selling them at £18 anymore, although there were some sellers offering it at that price, and Tesco online were out of stock. I just managed to get one from Currys though

Mate got one at Tesco the other day for £18.

So...am I right in thinking...movies I have downloaded to the laptop will play on my big telly?

No, dont think so. As far as I know, the only desktop program with the ability to chromecast is Chrome. Its really designed to be used with Android devices.

They should through Plex? The one reason I'm considering a Chromecast is for live streaming of various sporting websites that I use. I'm not 100% sure this is possible though. Surely in this day and age I should have a better option than linking a chunky HDMI cable up to my laptop?

You're right, Plex does. But only by using the Chrome browser plugin. It does, though, cast from the server, leaving the browser free for something else

Not sure about live streams in Chrome. In theory, they should work.

According to http://allaboutchromecast.com/chromecast-how-to-guide/comparison-of-5-methods-for-streaming-local-media-files-to-chromecast/ it can be done by putting the full video into the Chrome address bar ( or just dragging the video there) and then casting the Chrome tab in the Chrome browser. Once casted you can do other things on the laptop while the video is playing on the tv.

Haven't tried it myself as I just use android but there are also a couple of youtube videos showing it working.

Ah, interesting. The Videostream chrome extension looks interesting

Apologies to Jimmy for leading up a bit of a garden path for no reason
