Las Vegas hotel tips

I'm looking at booking a 4 night Vegas trip for next year, for me and Mrs Duck's joint 40th birthdays. What hotels would people recommend? The flasher the better, doesn't have to have a casino in-house but would be best to be on/near the Strip if it doesn't.

Stay off the strip would be my advice. We split our stay between The Orleans which has a free bus service to the strip, and The Golden Nugget which is downtown on Fremont Street. For the price of a basic room on the strip we got a cracking suite at The Golden Nugget.

The Orleans is a bit dated, but it's dirt cheap and clean. It's massive and has everything you need right there. If you do stay on the strip, make sure you go down to Fremont Street for a wander. They have a cracking show at night.

Visited a few months ago and stayed in the Aria for a few days followed by the Venetian. Both were spectacular and affordable.

One top tip: when booking the Aria we noted in the special requests section that we were on honeymoon* and any upgrades would be greatly appreciated. We were treated like kings. Upgraded to corner suite on the top floor and showered with strawberries and chocs, together with a note of congratulations. Vegas loves love.

* Actually married 3.5 years.

We stayed in the cosmopolitan last year which is pretty new and trendy, doesn't do any of the shows the others do, but it has a cracking pool overlooking the strip and does an incredible breakfast (it was the only place on our road trip which included breakfast), it's next door to the bellagio, so its pretty much in the middle of the strip

This totally depends on your budget but I would go with the Bellagio. Great central strip location and the hotel itself is unbelievable. Another hotel I really liked was the Mirage. Most hotel you stay at will have an in-house casino.

To be honest, you could stay at any hotel mentioned above and they'd all have the 'wow' factor. I also agree that you should stay away from the Stratosphere or any hotel down at that end.

For info: I stayed at the MGM and felt apart from a wild pool party there were better hotels available.

Mandarin Oriental? Nice! Anyone going to Vegas in the next few years could do worse than start playing the myVEGAS app on Facebook. (They also released a separate app for iOS and Android). I've been playing for close to 18 months and the amount of freebies you can get is pretty impressive; hotel stays, shows, food & drink, etc.

Staying 4 nights free at Aria as a result on our upcoming trip in March. :thumsup2

I stayed in the Vdara and it's excellent, non gaming but attached to the Bellagio so only a 5 min walk through the foyer and pretty central.

Yip , stayed in the Vdara too, fantastic new hotel , sister hotel of the Aria .

You basically want anywhere central (near the Ballagio)

A big plus about the Vdara is it is Non Smoking and Non Gaming which is a big relief as the gaming hotels are relentless and you'd have the feeling you're living in the middle of Sauchiehall St .

Make sure you ask for a high up room with Lake view , they'll give you it no problem if they have it normally it would cost about £300 extra .

Stayed in Caesars Palace two years ago and it was superb. We provisionally booked a room online but when we got to the desk we got chatting to the woman who was dealing with us and gave her a tip ($50) plus some "this is our first time in Vegas" chat and she upgraded us to an amazing room. The hotels (well the big ones) want you to stay there, gamble there and eat there so they don't care so much in terms of what they charge for the actual room itself (out with big conferences and high season)

I stayed in the Excalibur for a few weeks then the candlewood suites for a few weeks - can you believe I was sent on a works training course to the strip for 5 weeks !! :thumsup2

The Excalibur was fine - cheap enough and in the heart of the strip - I'm sure you won't spend much time in your hotel anyway 8)

I've stayed in a few Candlewoods in the States but the one on LV was sh1te - strong smell of bug spray when I got in every night ( better than cockroaches I suppose ) Hope you enjoy your trip

The Wynn is excellent. Although I see you have a hotel sorted.

Don't be fooled by the 'your type of room is sold out' gag when you check in. They try and get you to pay for an upgrade. Just say no and you will probably get an upgrade anyway.

Well, thanks for the tips guys . If anyone is interested -

- the Mandarin Oriental is fucking awesome. It's not a party hotel, no casino (albeit the Aria is 5 mins away), but if you really feel like spoiling yourself/other half, it's the way to go. Rooms fantastic, great views, such a good place to come back to after a mental day.

My thoughts on the other hotels visited (in order of preference):

- Wynn - top notch, felt on a par with the MO but bigger. Great casino. High table minimums though. Great brunch buffet. Mrs Duck won big at roulette.

- Bellagio - great during the day, a bit less so at night (although we were there over July 4). Fountains and Cirque de Soleil incredible. Tables good and friendly, loved the Blackjack and slots felt pretty loose.

- Paris - didn't game but fantastic breakfast at Mon Ami Gabi.

- Venetian - much less tacky than than I expected. Didn't play on the tables.

- Aria - very modern, loud, full of jocks and frat boys...and stunning young women. Decent tables though and good shops. Very helpful staff.

- Luxor - much more down market than those above but fun, cheap tables. Mental architecturally. The Bodies exhibition was weird but great.

- Caesers Palace - huge, shopping centre incredible, but didn't like the gaming floor.

- MGM - just astonishingly big and a bit mass market, but good eating options. Gaming floors a bit dark.

- Planet Hollywood. It was busy, I was tired, they took my last $100 bill at roulette. Bah.

- Rio - really downmarket. Was only there for a show and regretted it until $20 yielded $400 out of a slot machine while queuing.

- Monte Carlo - dark, dingy, poor value tables (6 to 5 on Blackjack). Won money but didn't enjoy it.

...all this should be read whilst bearing in mind that I was there as a nearly 40 year old with my wife. If you're there as a single 21 year old with some mates, there will be a different experience!
