Dundee United 2013/14 Season

Recommended Posts

After the St Johnstone game McNamara made it clear that changes were required for next season, he's already started the ball rolling with Pre-Season Contracts for the two Thistle lads.

I don't expect to see any changes with Cierzniak, Dillon, Watson, Douglas, Gunning, Gardyne or Armstrong. Ryan must improve if he is to stay and I think McLean will be kept on but not be a first team regular.

I'd love to see us keeping Flood but don't know if it will happen. Tornstrand and Boulding will go and I think Dow will go as well. Daly has been a great servant for us but I'm not sure we would get another good year out of him so if he can go to Sevco for a payday then good luck to him.

Hopefully Gauld and Souttar will get more playing time; both have great potential and have been called up to the Scotland under-19 squad.

That leaves Russell and GMS. IMO the former will go, hopefully for a decent fee, and I hope we get at least another six months out of the latter before his transfer to Barca in December!

So fellow Arabs (and others) what do you think, any other changes you want to see? Anyone you would want to see coming in?

I would hope that the defence would be strengthened, as much as I like all the defensive players you mentioned (and Rado), there is just something not quite right there. If Souttar is to play more next season, we need an experienced, reliable centre half along side him.

The two Thistle boys seem to be good acquisitions, though hopefully they will get more of a chance early on than last season's D1 acquisitions.

And if Daly is to leave, we will need to bring in a similar player, otherwise we will end up with a pretty lightweight attack - that might be alright for Barca, but not in the SPL sadly.

Dude from my bus meet Richie Ryan and he said he will sit down with Jmc at the end of the season, if he ain't going to be getting 1st team footie he is off.

Flood has settled into Inchture with his family and his kids have not long started school, however this means he will be at United or Aberdeen next season as his wife has seemingly put the foot down.

As for Gauld and Souttar, I saw them out at the Underground (Nighclub auld ane) on Tuesday so if this wasn't a one off(might have been was the day they got called up for Scotland), I wouldn't hold your breath for anything special from them, out on the booze at 16 &17 not ideal.

Hopefully Russell get a decent deal for us and him, however GMS is signing a 20 year contract because he loves the shed, however he will be gone hopefully post Jan rather than the summer.

As for changes, I was really keen to see a right winger come in, Erskine can play either wing so hopefully that is that, with Gomis, Buaben & Webster all free at the end of the season, would love to see either come in and with out doubt we need a strong commanding CB.

I hope flood re-signs with us ,but as has been said, we really do need to strengthen the defence, hopefully signing at least two decent defenders.

As for Russell, if we can keep him then fantastic, but the price will have to be very good to prise him away

GMS ,I think just needs to man up a little and try not to do too much as he has been prone to do,instead of taking that extra touch, pass the ball. and stay upright

As Daly seems to be on his way to the bigot brothers, I would absolutely love us to get Higdon in,although price may be too high for us

and yes, Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel, imagine getting Webster, gomis and bauben back , that would be a dream !!

hopefully Erskine and Paton will live up to their expectations and beyond

Were they rolling around steaming or just socialising with a drink with their pals? Big difference. Both have massive potential, so if it is leading to major boozing and late nights then this needs nipped in the bud and booted in the balls before it becomes even a small issue.

In all fairness, Gauld seemed to be having a casual drink, however Souttar looked like he was having the night of his life 8)

Has Douglas left?

Don't know if he has left yet, however Lech Poznan offered him to go train with them, furthermore have offered a deal.

Would be fairly dissapointed if Douglas left tbh, he's still you and has the potential to mature into a decent SPL standard LB IMO

Pre JMc he looked useless, however his game has come along under JMc, so would be a little dissappointed if he left.

That's probably the limit of his potential though. He's certainly improved under MacNamara but that's not saying a great deal. If he stays, fair enough, but I'd hope he'd be seriously challenged next season because this year he's been mostly poor and his only serious competition is from an awful centre half (McLean) and a guy who's needed elsewhere in defence.

My preference would be for Gunning to scoot across to left back. Too flaky for centre half but still technically decent, fast, strong etc. I reckon he'd make a good attacking left back.

It depends on how your boss views the season. By and large was it successful? Certainly a top six finish is very commendable and would indicate a reasonable campaign, albeit with some scope for improvement. That being the case, little change is necessary except to replace players who leave.

If he decides, on the other hand, that United could have done considerably better, he must work out why his charges underperformed. Was it simply down to bad luck/injuries, in which case again little change is necessary. If however he decides that quite a few players didn't earn their corn then the squad must undergo surgery.

From what I've seen of the Arabs this season, which is admittedly limited, I'd say that you need more creativity in midfield and the defence needs a significant overhaul.

Our defence has been our weakest point, but having our top scorer out and Daly struggling with an injury and/or playing in defence has not helped at the other end of the park. I think we will lose all five post-split fixtures, so that takes the shine off a wee bit.

I think McNamara will be determined to address the weaknesses but, as with all other SPL managers, he will have to do so on a very restricted budget. At least he seems determined to face up to the problems rather than just to paper over the cracks.

Don't know how strong you are at right back, but there's been talk you're interested in Stephen O'Donnell from us. Probably played his best stuff for us under Jackie, and I'm told he'd fancy a move to you.

Would require compensation because of his age as the Jags have already offered a new contract.
