Craig Levein

Why is he so loathed amongst the Scotland support? Other than the fact he has a shaggy beard and played 6 in midfield against the Czechs in Prague, I don't think he's done that terrible a job, far from it infact. We punch above our weight considering the size of our country in most respects, and I think given time we will only get better under his tutelage. Who could we get that would do a far better job? I don't think there are many, if any, obvious candidates.

For me it's the Fletcher thing. I dislike fletcher too as it takes two to tango. We are not a good enough side to leave out a player of Fletchers quality and the fact that they can't or don't want to sort it out infuriates me.

Because, and this is just my opinion, a lot of Scotland supporter's are stuck in the 80's and 90's. They remember the days when we qualified for things with "relative" ease. They remember times when Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Slovenia, Bosnia WERE genuinely rank rotten and should be beaten. They haven't(or can't) accept that these countries have gotten better at Football, while we've stagnated to a point.

Edit:

Add to that the "Fletcher incident", the negative 4-6, and people who didn't support his appointment to begin with suddenly have a lot of ammunition.

For me, i'm backing him for this campaign. It is my belief that every manager deserves TWO campaigns minimum. One to sort out their best team/tactical f**k ups. The second to qualify us.

McLiesh, Smith and Strachan are all avalible.

I'm not saying they WOULD do better course, just that they are clear, obvious candidates.

His enthusiasm vacuum he's deployed, his shite beard, his shite patter, his alienation of (probably) our best striker, his pathetic pursuit of Barry Ferguson, Garry Kenneth, shite performances, shite campaign, bottling it against the Czechs, twice, calling up Danny Swanson, his 'improving' mantra, claiming he wouldn't call up Lee Wallace because he played for Sevco, then calling up Ian Black. Weird squad selections, selecting Gary MacKenzie simply to justify having a scout in England, publically chasing Jonjo Shelvey/Andy Carroll.

I dunno, there's probably more, but thats what springs to mind. Effectively, the guy is an absolute hypocrite and seems to speak as if the rest of us are mere mortals as opposed to his rarified position as the brains of Scottish football. I don't know if he thinks he's playing mind games or whatever, but it comes across really badly.

My problem with those three would be the minute a 'better' job came along they would be off like a shot. Levein would probably do the same but he is less fashionable so unlikely to get offered anything better anytime soon. Surely continuity is the best option for us at the moment, and Leveins record so far has been perfectly acceptable?

Eck yeah, Smith and Strachan I'm not so sure to be honest.

I'd agree re continuity and Levein's record is alright. The Fletcher thing is probably the only major negative I can think of.

Perhaps a strange point to pick up on but Croatia have never been "rank rotten" in their entire existence, what an utterly bizarre statement.

They were when they just broke away from Yugoslavia. That was my point.

These countries that have been newly created in the last 20 years(and weren't about when we regularly qualified) have improved, yet people still think we should be beating them on the basis of the past.

Given that the only one we've played out of those is Lithuania, then yeah, we should be beating them. We beat them well in the recent past, then scraped by a 1-0 at Hampden, this isn't improvement.

The Fletcher issue is one which has blame on both sides and I'm not absolving Fletcher of it, but given Levein's very public chases of Carroll and Ferguson, to take such a dim view of Fletcher doesn't sit well with me.

If Fletcher contacted Levein tomorrow and said he was ready to play I guarantee he would be in the next squad. Until that happens I don't blame CL whatsoever. I'd rather have players that want to play.

The results and performances in the competitive games haven't been good enough imo.

The 0-0 in Kaunas was really poor. They were there for the taking but he was happy to get the point. The result meant we were already chasing our tails in the group.

The less said about the games against the Czechs the better.

Scraped 2 wins against Lichtenstein.

On the plus side we thumped Wales and Norn Irons C teams and for 30 mins we totally hammered the World Champs at Hampden and we have had another couple of decent friendly wins.

I think he was the wrong man for the job from the very start and Kenny Black being part of the set up really pisses me off for some reason.

Why should we be beating them? There was ONE player who played in both games, showing the our national squad is still, clearly, going through transition. Lithuania had 6. Therefore a more settled team.

People claim that groups we were in, in the past, were "piss poor" but so was our team...

I'm kind of baffled as to how a team with ten changes between a few games proves that Levein is doing okay.

We cuffed them 3-1 at Hampden and 1-2 away in Kaunas under Smith, with players who weren't as good as the ones we have now. They haven't improved their calibre of player dramatically, yet we managed 0-0 away and 1-0 at Hampden.

I'd have sacked him over the 4-6-0 formation.

He seems to go out of his way to annoy players with his contradictions. I just don't trust him and think that he is doing a better job of keeping his suspect temperament in check than getting the best out of the players at our disposal.

I really want to like him.

However he doesn't help himself sometimes.

-The whole Fletcher saga, which I agree isn't all his fault, however this could have been nipped in the bud fucking ages ago.

-6-4-0

-Comes across as very arrogant and his squad selections are questionable for a variety of reasons.

-Calling up Ian Black and then giving him 5 minutes at the end just to prove a point to the critics.

That being said, he has my full backing for this campaign.

Hope he proves me and many others completely wrong but I fear we are in for a very uninspiring campaign which will fizzle out very quickly :(
