I've never bothered with smart phones taking the "I only wanna send a text or make a phonecall" approach but the world isn't taking this approach anymore and I think it's about time I give in to peer presure despite still being adement I don't need one.
I actually have no idea where to begin, online is an absolute minefield of information and if you ask anyone who has got one they are quick to defend theirs and attack anything else so the one I should get depends on who you speak to.
I currently have a sim only 300 mins and 300 texts and that gets me through so I don't need heaps of minutes. How much data do you need if you want to run one of these things? I don't have wifi in work so any skiving will be done on 3G. I take it Sky Go won't work on a smart phone perfectly without wifi or will it be okay, cause I could just sign up for every overtime shift and watch the football if it does, factor that in if it'll work.
I don't have a budget as such but I would want something that is 'reasonable', I don't know what that is but I don't need some uber top spec all singing mini pc in my hand cause frankly I'm a tard with that kind of stuff. I currently don't have an ipod or anything and don't really like listening to music through headphones but I guess I could use that on the train, I won't be needing to put a billion songs on it though. If you could recomment the best value tariff around that'd be good, are 24 month contracts really that big a deal and how do they work, ie after 24 months do they basically send me the newest all singing all dancing phone and I carry on for another 2 years?
The only time I ever have cause to use them (borrow someone elses) is to check the full football scores at half time during Thistle games and occasionally for putting a bet on for early kick offs where I work late and can't access sites in the office computers.
It seems I should be deciding between an iphone 4GS or a Galaxy S2 or is there something else I should be looking at? Pretend I'm your grandfather you tech savy young ins, what should I do? Are the 3 network still 'shite' as I've heard before or are things alright with them now?

Wait 'til your grandkids get fed up with their current model and then get theirs, shouldn't be long.
I get 250 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited net for £10 per month on PAYG.

If you've never ever used a smart phone before i'd say get an iphone.. They are really easy to use and you can get sky go through 3G..
The galaxay s2 is a great phone as well.. I've got a galaxay nexus and i just find them a wee bit more complicated than the iphone.. Plus there's no sky go for andriod phones yet.
. The nexus and the S2 do have bigger screens which make web surfing and watching movies alot better than the iphone

I've probably posted this link more than any other on P&B but it's a decent starting point to see what you could be looking at.

I've got a Galaxy S2 and would recommend it, only issue I had was text entry was a pain but there's apps you can get which make life a lot easier.

First thing I would do if I was you is write down how much you are comfortable spending on your monthly bill and go from there.

You get a lot better deals for the Samsung galaxy s2 than the iPhone. Both are great devices but the Samsung isn't ring fenced by apple which want you to use their stuff and that's it.

Im guessing he's talking about other keyboards. I use Swiftkey and there are others like , Swype, that will replace the default keyboard.

I've got the Galaxy S, and whilst it's a good phone, I've experienced some minor problems, that combined, become quite annoying...
For example, the auto rotate function (which is useful for texting, otherwise the buttons are tiny) stopped working, it's proving difficult to get it to charge, have to play with the charger and phone and balance it perfectly (its not the charger wiring, but the phone itself), and it has noticeably started to slow down.
I've had it since May last year, and whilst i do use it a lot, still think this is pretty poor.
Before this, i had the Blackberry curve 9800 and loved it, and will definitely going back to Blackberry once i get rid of this thing. Never had any problems with it.
So, a blackberry of 9800 or newer would be my recommendation.

Do I want to be going for a contract phone or do I want to be buying a phone and getting a sim only deal?
For example iphone with limited minutes/texts and 500MB data is £31 with free phone on 24 month contract.
Iphone for £500 then Tesco loads of minutes/texts and 1MB data for £12.50 per month for 12 months.
I take it with the contract I'd get a free up to date iphone model when my contract runs out, with the sim only do I punt the phone myself an buy a new one, or say if I keep it for 2 years will I be better off punting phone, buying newer replacement and coninuing sim only?

It doesn't always stand to reason that you'd get the best phone free at the end of your two year contract - it depends on what tariff you're on, and £31 is pretty middle of the road cost wise (the lower the tariff, the more you pay for the upgrade). There would, of course, be nothing to stop you cancelling your contract at the end of the two years, then taking out a new contract straight away enabling yourself to get the best phone of the day.
If you can afford the initial outlay at the beginning, then buying sim free and getting a sim only deal like the one you mentioned is probably the best bet.
I wouldnae be getting the iPhone though.

I know a few people who have had an iphone, changed to an Android phone, and are happy they made the change. From what Ive been told, iphones are overrated

My first piece of advice would be to NOT get an iPhone. Over-rated and over-priced. There are plenty of phones out there that are simply better than an iPhone and at a fraction of the cost. Currently, Samsung are leading the way with smartphones so I'd take a look at a few of them. I have the Galaxy S2 which is absolutely phenomenal and possibly the best thing I've ever purchased. I wouldn't necessarily recommend that as, by the sounds of it, you'd get something even cheaper which would satisfy your needs. Have a look at the Motorola RAZR as well although I'm not sure what price you'd be looking at with that handset.

I'm 99% set on buying a sim free HTC Evo 3D which looks cracking value and then getting a giffgaff sim.

Little late to the party, and although I wouldn't quite put it like this, my iPhone is the best thing I've ever bought. It's a wonderful thing in and of itself, without comparing to anything else. Thoroughly recommended.

Oh, you do, you do
Its sooo slick. All the menus and transitions are really smooth. The screen is amazing. Movies and images look so clear and the colours are just superb. The only downside was the LCD density was set to 320, so the text size was way too big - for me anyway. Took about 2 mins to root it and adjust it to what I wanted.
The one complaint I did have, is that the Samsung default launcher, while looking good, only works in portrait. I put adw on it anyway, so once Id adjusted the density it looks great
The big screen will put lots of people off, but the physical size of the phone is actually slightly smaller than my old Dell Streak.
edited to add - I got it on O2, but managed to get a better deal and a free xbox 360 by going through this site. Free next day delivery on both phone and 360
