It will impact a bit on us as we do run a small squad. It won't mean the end of our use of loans altogether though; we'll still bring them in during August and January.

That's not my interpretation of it. The Telegraph article states "The effect of this ruling is that short-term loans will not be allowed during the 'closed’ periods between transfer windows, starting from season 2014/15." That suggest loans will be allowed outwith the closed period to me, but I would assume that the length of any loan would by necessity need to last until the next open period.

It's getting a lot of attention is England due to the fact that the Football League currently play silly beggars with the transfer window. It doesn't mean the end of loans - just players won't be able to join or return outside the windows.

Yeh it just means no emergency loans. I think it's a good idea. It will force teams to use there youngsters more if they have an injury crisis

This won't affect the Old Firm though, as they currently live outside Rules and Regulations made by any Governing Body.

I agree with that. It seems in the past that too many teams are too quick to get a loan player in from an SPL side for a month as opposed to giving their own youngsters a chance. I was never a fan of getting players in for a month so I'm quite happy this is going through.

A few teams at this level may require to field half-fit players or play folk out of position if they don't have a youth team or only have a token youth team, but for the most part I think it could well be a positive move in the long run. It means that loan deals will require to be arranged earlier and for longer periods and clubs will simply have to make do with what they have, which I'm fully in favour of. Will there still be an allowance for special dispensation to sign goalkeepers on emergency loan deals in the event of a keeper injury crisis? Or will clubs have to get around it by signing unattached keepers on amateur terms or using trialists for 3 games?

I don't think it's been clarified regarding goalkeepers, but personally, I've never been much of a fan of the "special rules for goalkeepers" thing anyway. Every club should have a youth team, and should therefore always have (at least) 2 keepers to fall-back on if their 2 (at least) first-team keepers are not available.

Clubs could also register their goalkeeping coach for back-up, which is what Berwick traditionally do.

According to SFL website, only clubs not participating in U19s are Falkirk + Hamilton (do they still participate in SPL U19s even after relegation?) plus Albion, Elgin, Stranraer.

Pretty much agree with what everyone else has said - except 55022 of course - more proof that you can't trust people with numbers for a username!

I have to say I was very surprised to see the large number of emergency loans during the course of a typical year. As was pointed out there surely can't be that many "emergencies" each year.

I do think though that an exceptino should be made for goalkeepers - it is such a specialist position, it simply isn't feasible to bring an amateur or youngster in at very short notice.
