In one of various discussions I have with fellow football fans, a point raised by a Rangers fan living in Dunfermline was that we only supported Dunfermline because we were lazy and couldnt be bothered to travel further afield to find our footballing fix. The point was scoffed at by many, but it got me thinking. If I lived in Kirkcaldy then I probably would have been a Raith fan and so on. So does this make me less of a fan simply because the only reason I support the team is because it's where i've been brought up and I've lacked the imagination to support somebody for a valid reason?

So being a plastic weegie is the opposite of being "lazy"?

I don't know. My dad is a Raith fan, so I can't tell if being born here and living all my days in Kirkcaldy influenced my decision to support the Rovers.
I think I'd probably still be a Raith fan regardless of where I was born, though I can't say for sure. This does tend to mean I can't criticise the legions of Celtic/Rangers fans that live in Kirkcaldy, as my own situation is no different from the thousands of people that will justify it by saying 'ma da' wiz a bluenose' etc.
That said, I would still be supporting a shitty lower league team, so it would be OK to support Raith instead of my local team.

Dunfermline boss Jim McIntyre must be at a loss to explain the succession of goalkeeping howlers he's witnessed from the frazzled Pars this season. I'm picturing a scene akin to Basil Fawlty whacking his car repeatedly with a branch after deciding "enough is enough!"

Support whoever you want, who cares if they are local or not. Clyde are my local team and I went to follow them more probably due to the type of person I am. If I didn't support Clyde I wouldn't bother with another Scottish team. I'm too old and hooked to just abandon them now.

Does said Rangers fan actually attend games at Ibrox or has he got a season ticket for his armchair?

There's something for me that makes me proud to support my town.
It's like being a proper patriot, you're proud as f**k to be from there so you have a strong passion for it, I'm proud to be from Dunfermline and have a passion for Dunfermline Athletic.

IMO The whole point in a football team is that it is representing the local community. Isnt that why every team was set up? I am proud to be from Dundee, they are "my" people and thats why I support Dundee.

I don't think I would support Clyde if they weren't local, they moved to cumbernauld just after I was born and now they are moving again. I will follow them to ek but I doubt any of the young fans from cumbernauld will and its a shame. I hate living in cumbernauld incidently but Clyde were hardly born in the town so its hard to gain that 'pride of the town' thing.

It was at one point but not anymore. Look at Livi, Clyde, Airdrie and even Rangers and Celtic. All the Irish came over and started supporting Celtic so all the Scottish idiots tried to compensate this and support Rangers.

Is it ok to support your second most local team? In my defence, my local team didn't exist until I was 9 years old. I would rather go on an Italian cruise ship to Syria than support ICT.

My dad is an Accies fan being from Hamilton, I've still got a soft spot for them though but Motherwell mean more to me because I live 5 minutes from the ground. I've had Accies season tickets in the past when they were in the 3rd and 2nd division.

well being from troon , its debateable whether ayr or kilmarnock were my local team however it is AYRshire so there really only should be one team
but i now live in paisley and have to travel to "find my football fix " in response to your point
but the rangers fan is clearly a cock who thinks people dont go to away games

I support Ayr United as they are my local senior side (Maybole Juniors are my local junior team). No matter where I was born or brought up I would support my local side,
Keighan Parker- ""Out of all the places I've played, the biggest crowd to noise ratio I've experienced is at Ayr." Ryan Stevenson- "I managed to play for Ayr, the team i supported as a boy" Liam Tomsett-"The fans were amazing, to come all that way up there and give us that backing. I couldn't believe the way they were carrying on- it was crazy"

I couldn't imagine supporting a team that I didn't have a local link with the same passion.

I started supporting Cowden because they were on my door to speak when I was a youngster. I went along with my friends and just sort of got into the habit which has lasted 36 years or so
A few years later I started High School in Dunfermline and most of my school friends were Pars fans and sometimes when Cowden were away from home I would go to games at East End Park, if I hadn't been a Cowden fan before then I may have ended up as a Pars fan
I don't think I would ever have went to watch the Old Firm I doubt that my parents would have allowed me to travel to Glasgow as a youngster to watch football.

You could say the same for which country you were born in as well. Really it doesn't matter all that much cause you have a local team you support and that's like a drug, so no matter how shit it is you are now hooked for life and better get used to it.

First game of football I went to was the 1990 cup semi between Celtic and Clydebank. Andy Walker scored first and I celebrated because I was 7 and someone scored. Followed Celtic since, but in the last 5 or 6 years I've attended far more Clydebank games. Only went to the odd one back in the days they were a senior team. I would always pick Celtic as my team, but most folk who know me will tend to ask how the Bankies are getting on before giving me abuse for following Celtic.

Agree. I honestly don't see why people get worked up about people from Perth supporting Celtic or Rangers etc. They moan about them going down every week yet they are just as hyprocritical. I mind when Dundee Utd won that Scottish Cup in 2010 and Dundee was a sea of orange and black that night in many bars and spoke to a few of them who said they would be going every week.
People choose their teams for many reasons. One of my best friends supports Celtic because he seen a Tennants Sixes match and they were so shite that he decided to follow them (he was about 5 at the time).

If that's the case then why don't you want Dundee Utd to be successful too (assuming you don't, as I'd guess most Dundee fans wouldn't)? Given the proximity of the grounds they must be just as local as Dundee FC, give or take a few yards. If it was a true 'representing the community' reason behind supporting Dundee then why want Dundee to be succesful and Dundee Utd not to be? Again, I'm assuming you don't like to see Dundee Utd do well, if you do then I take your point.
I don't really get the local team obsession that fans of diddy clubs have (despite supporting said local diddy club). It's not as if the teams are full of local players who feel passionate about the community. To me supporting a local team is more out of convenience than some affinity to the town.

I support Falkirk because when I wad 6 my grandad took me to a game v Motherwell to see if I would like it, and I did. So over the next few years he took me to home games and my dad, a bus driver took me to away games on the supporters buses he drove.
Although I am very patriotic to Falkirk.
Born in Falkirk.
Lived in Falkirk all my life.
Support Falkirk FC.
Went to Falkirk high.
Work for Falkirk council.
