Hi, i've been driving buses for 4 months now. Just wondered if any of you guys or girls work or worked in this industry, i've had 2 minor accidents, i've knocked 2 wing mirrors off. So not too bad.

Was he seriously injured? see this is what scares me. The people in Leeds drive like maniac's, so we have to be extra vigilant. Especially taxi drivers, they'll do anything to get a claim out of the company, when it was they're fault.

My old man was a bus driver in Glasgow for almost 20 years, used to drive an old routemaster.

Never had an accident, but developed a big dislike for taxi drivers.

  I bet he got more than tea and biscuits at his disciplinary. I've had a few near misses, especially driving up guide ways. People often jump out on you. We call them suicide routes, i know it isn't pleasant, but people often use a guide way to commit suicide as a bus cannot manouvre out of the way. Unfortunately this happened at Xmas just passed, thats what the police reckoned anyway. The poor driver's life changed in that instant. the other danger of guide ways is ripping a guide arm off the bus. A £1000 a pop, severe bollockings for that.

I normally drive a Gemini double decker. I hate taxi drivers too, especially when they park in bus stops.

A relative of mine drove a bus over a railway crossing whilst the lights were flashing, narrowly missing the train. The ungrateful passengers complained and he was dismissed, fined, etc. He told a Daily Record photographer where to go outside the court.

I thought this was another point 'n' laugh at Moore thread.

Bus drivers are just taxi drivers who don't talk.

I think (THINK!) it's a bus lane that guides the bus, so the driver doesn't need to steer?

That's a good question, as i'm new to the job i haven't been a torn faced p***k yet. But i'm sure it'll happen, i think mainly it's to do with the attitude of passengers. I mean i know that these people have been stressed out at work, and the only way to vent the anger is to take it out on the bus driver. ie if we're late, the bus is packed full and there's no seats left, fare disputes. Or its a case of "if you treat me like shite, i'll treat you like shite".

They're mostly used where congestion in Cities is rife, the bus has 2 small wheels attached to the front wheels. Once the bus is inside the guide way it kind of acts like a tram. ICTChris is also correct, you don't steer it. You just place you're hands on top of the steering wheel and guide it without bouncing it off either side of the mounted kerbs.

I get the bus most days (the 240 for those who are in Glasgow) and by and large the majority of drivers on this route are c***s.
"The kids are turned off from politics, they say. Most of 'em don't even want to hear about it. All they want to do these days is lie around on waterbeds and smoke that goddamn marrywanna... yeah, and just between you and me Fred thats probably all for the best."

Not suprising. Considering I get the temptation to knock them down myself everytime they cycle in the middle of an narrow single lane road, moving at backwards pace on a roundabout, not signaling, not wearing protective headgear or reflective clothing etc etc etc.

Comedy gold ! Although the taxi driver bit rings pretty true !
We now await the entrance of taxi drivers, who no doubt will confirm that all road accidents are down to motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians .

Incidentally, perhaps you could confirm whether buses, like taxis, have their indicator stalks removed before leaving the garage .

PS. Don't worry too much about only having had a couple of minor bumps....I'm sure that you'll be given the opportunity to cause some real damage . :)

We wouldn't leave the depot without indicator stalks ;)

And it's inevitable that accidents will happen in such a large vehicle.
