Never seen a St Roch's Supporter on here so i have decided to start a wee thread on them . I have a old relative ( very old ) who played for the candy roch back in the 50's and st roch's was the first junior team i ever saw the Roy play , so they have always been close to my heart.

Brilliant draw for them getting talbot , IMO little or no chance of winning the game but one thing is for sure the romance of the cup is still alive with the roch's exploits this year.

The excellent juniorsinfo website on the day of the match will be following the candyroch from the minute they leave on the supporters bus till they get home at night here is more info ... http://www.thejunior...s-and-st-rochs/

I have attached some old photos and extracts from there finest player (and what a player the legendary Jimmy McGrory British Record Goalscorer till this day ! ) autobiography from 1975 which i have , signed by the man himself i may add Posted Image.
btw if anyone can get who shadow wrote the autobiography i will be very impressed !
These sort of stories only highlight how proud we all should be of the junior game.

Gerry McNee, Jimmy Cairney

PS Why should any Senior player's view highlight anything? True Junior men should have the final say ;)

I remember years ago McNee mentioning that on some TV programme sure he said McGrory gave him one of his championship medals for writting the book.

McGrory played against Talbot in a 7th round Scottish cup tie. He did f-all in the game. I find it strange that tosser boy should bring Mcgrory up. I have just did a small article on Frank Brogan for the programme. Very interetsing

Why strange ? The greatest goalscorer in British football history started off at a junior club and a club who are in the news at the moment . If bringing the man's name up in relation to st roch's is strange to you then so be it .

Btw anyone can have a bad game and thanks for the positive comments port and glencairn least you guys don't find it ' strange '

Great post RRG. Surprisingly enough I also have a soft spot for St Roch`s or the Candy as we call them as i`m protestant by birth and a Rangers fan.
I don`t know why, but I have always been interested in them and have read a good bit about their history etc and it is always a great experience to go to their ground and watch them play.
I have the utmost respect for these guys and their committee who keep the Roch going in the face of adversity in these most challenging times of financial doom. Also their hospitality is second to none as i`ve been to places where opposition support wont even look at you, but at the Roch the guys just engage you in convo regardless of who or what you are. My kinda people.Posted Image

Why the article on McGory or St Roch's? Why not bring it up before the Talbot tie. why not bring up the fact that the Candy sa? that Stevie Chalmers was not signed by St Rochs but actually was an Ashfield player or was he? Whats your take on that?

I explained ffs , a elderly relative of mine played for st roch's , the first junior game i ever saw involved st roch's. I have Mcgrory's autobiogrpahy and he was from the area where st roch's are from. I wanted to post a wee bit about them and there most famous son as they are in the limelight for the first time in a long time , ffs if you don't like it fair enough .

I have commented on st roch's anytime in the past they have been mentioned on here which is not very often.

Anyway thanks again for the positive replies hopefully folk find it a decent read .

Stevie Chalmers was originally a Rob Roy player, and iirc he became ill, although I don't remember all the details.
But a few weeks later, he turned up with a doctor's certificate which stated that he would be unable to play football again, and so was subsequently released by the 'Roy'.
About a year later, he signs for Ashfield, and the rest, they say, is history.
Always leaves a bad taste in my mouth when his name comes up.
...frightening, and lightening fast was he .....
you never saw, a man outdraw,
The man from Adamslie!

You can take the man out of the Port, but you cant take the Port out of the man.

RRG, a good post and read. The candy have a place close to my heart as they were the first junior club i played for after leaving school.

I also have it on very good authority that Stevie Chalmers couldn't even get a game for St Roch's school team.

i agree with kirkland R R G Y NOT POST THIS EARLIER is it cause ur team is out of the cup and ur anti biased to talbot u have all year to put that up but nope u wait till they play talbot ur very sneaky but at least we all know rob roy wont be in the final ha ha ha and yeah we might have got an easy draw but if i was st rochs i would be worried the way talbot r playing it could end up a cricket score or do u disagree with that

St. Roch's ground always astounds me. It should be wrecked into oblivion with it being so near to the Red Road Flats and the neds around there, but the ground and the pitch are remarkably clean and well-preserved. Good job!

Good post RRG I enjoyed reading it McGrory comes across very well. I haven't a clue what the Talbot posters are getting worked up about and as you say St Rochs are in the Junior limelight just now and a topical time to post.

The whole book is a fantastic read , one thing that strikes me is despite all he achieved in the game he never forgot his roots and st roch's .
You also have to laugh when he comments on kids nowadays remember this is wrote in 1975 , how they have everything compared to what he had .

The chapter on st rochs last several pages those are just the first 5 pages .

Did Dennis McQuade play for Partick when they beat the Celtic in the League Cup final.
Dennis & Domanic were a fine wing pairing for St Rochs.
