2012 will mark 60 years since Lizzy took the throne. No doubt a ridiculous amount of money will be spent celebrating this.
Does anyone still get excited over the royal family? Do people get a wee tear in the eye seeing a women who has acquired wealth and power through birthright?
I'd get shot of them in a heartbeat if it was my decision, but sadly it's not.
So, Let's have a poll, see what the fellow P&Ber's think!

I've been reading a lot of charm-offensive material from the monarchists lately about how hard the queen works and how it must be exhausting for her to have 370+ public engagements each year at her age. I agree completely with this. So why not let her retire? Monarchists talk about her tirelessness and her stoicism as if it's a good thing. Is it really? Keeping a pensioner in a gilded cage, having her shake hands with diplomats every day for the cameras, doesn't exactly point to the virtue of monarchists. It marks them out as people for whom the institution and the authority is more important than the person.
From my point of view it would be as much of a benefit to the royals as to the country to abolish the monarchy and it should be done immediately.

Just to follow that up: I'm far more concerned with the country than I am the royals. I don't mean to come across as if sympathy for the Windsors is my motivation. It's only a small part of it. Having an illiberal system of governnance run on hereditary principles is an absolute affront to what British society should stand for - that's the long and short of it.

Can't believe it's 2012 yet we still don't have democracy.
I've began to think that all those who "support" the continuation of the Monarchy are just trolling.

Get them to f**k. I can just about tolerate the Queen and actually quite like Chaz but the thought that Prince William will one day rule over me can f**k right off. Luckily Scotland will be an independent republic before that ever happens.

And of course you get Cameron and co spouting a load of tosh about the Jubilee bringing as all togeather at this difficult time. Aye right. It will not help pay my mortgage or gas bills.

The only benefit for me of there being a royal family is you get the odd day off like the royal wedding last year.

I agree pretty much with everything Swampy said. The fact that we still cling to remnants of a past, and much worse, age like the monarchy, the house of lords and the honours system should be a source of absolute shame for anyone in this country.
Independence and ditch the lot of it.

It's getting kind of hard to believe things are going to get better. I've been drowning too long to believe that the tide is going to turn. And I've been living too hard to believe things are going to get easier now. I'm still trying to shake off the pain from the lessons I've learned. And if I see Van Helsing, I swear to the lord I will slay him. AHA HA HA. He take you from me but I swear I won't let it be so. AHA HA HA. Blood, will run done his face, when he is decapitated AH! His head on my mantle is how I will let this world know...how much I love you.

It's downright disgusting.
Think alot of people hold back on expressing their republican views because Mrs Windsor is a respectable old lady but the whole situation will change once one of the males get their hands on the throne. I for one certaintly won't hold back for those c***s.

The SNP's policy on this makes political sense, but morally and in terms of just being a good idea, it's awful. I can fully understand why they're doing what they're doing but it disgusts me every time I think of it.

One of them tried on this thread but he devolved into a tear-drenched, tone-trolling mess after around six posts or so:

It may be SNP policy but, like many things, it will be easier to ditch the royals in an independent Scotland than it would be as part of the UK.
Can't add much to Swampy's earlier comments. I cringe every time there is a story about the royals on the news, particularly when it take priority over real news.
