Right-wingers tend to be less intelligent than left-wingers, and people with low childhood intelligence tend to grow up to have racist and anti-gay views, says a controversial new study.Conservative politics work almost as a 'gateway' into prejudice against others, say the Canadian academics.

The paper analysed large UK studies which compared childhood intelligence with political views in adulthood across more than 15,000 people.

The authors claim that people with low intelligence gravitate towards right-wing views because they make them feel safe.

Surely panic stations for the Daily Mails subscriptions department tomorrow morning?

I don't buy The Daily Mail. The pubs I frequent seem to have quite a few "Mail" readers in them though. I'd rather listen to their little rants than read Joan Burnie. Whit a left wing, no brain, man hating howk she is. Whoever pays her for her "opinions" should be shot with a cannon.

Right wingers are just as stupid as anyone else, the problem isn't lack of intelligence, it's lack of empathy.

It's time we started treating it as a mental illness.

Good article, although the results are pretty obvious.

One signifier of superior intelligence that lefty's have is their ability to identify their position on the spectrum.

Right-wing types never aknowledge that they are right-wing, usually saying I'm 'just a realist/use common sense' etc.
This, despite conservatives usually being the most detached from reality, unsensible people you could meet.

Theres someone on there saying Diamond Dave isn't a real Conservative and that the UK is being run 'like a liberals paradise'   BITCH PLEASE.

I'm sure a similar study about this was done a few years back and it had the same findings.

EDIT- Found it.

You might question why the daily mail would run this story, obviously to rile up their readers against the left and whoever commissioned these reports. They know their readers operate on outrage, why not stoke the flames while having a wee dig at them too.

Reynard has always preached personal responsibility on this site.

Hopefully he will not use his retardation to justify his ridiculous political posing.

I'm very reluctant to pathologise anyone's political views but there is a subset of right-wingers in democracies who can be called right-wing authoritarians (who are far more numerous and proportionally more prevalent than any other kind of authoritarian.) The Daily Mail has some of these on its columnist staff and of course writes for them as well. (That's not to say that every Daily Mail reader is a right-wing authoritarian by any means. Merely it's to say that this would be their daily of choice and a fair percentage are attracted to its editorial line.)

I recommend this (free) book to anyone concerned about the rise of right-wing authoritarianism. It's written from a US perspective but you can apply the same thinking to pretty much any western liberal democracy.

The study didn't contend otherwise. There's no need to play a false equivalence game here. Just read what it says if you want to comment on it.

It used to be less wet in the good old day though, before political correctness and foreigners turned up and made it more wet.

Just a comment from William M. Briggs:

Quote

Another was, “People who break the law should be rehabilitated.” Just kidding! It’s actually, “People who break the law should be given stiffer sentences.” The bias in the question wording is ignored.

It's supposed to be biased, that's the whole point. It's looking for adherence to a certain worldview by using appropriate trigger phrases and mixing it up with other questions.

I don't know nearly enough about statistics to otherwise comment.

edit: I see the guy edited his article to hand-wave away the question complaint. He should stick to statistics.
