The police don't appear to be doing much in that footage. I'd go as far as to say they were standing back and allowing the violence to happen. Given the recent revolution in Egypt, I'd be surprised if there wasn't more to this than merely a Cairo/Port Said rivalry. Can anyone on here shed some light on the issue?

One of the sides is meant to be pro Mubarak and the other side pro revolution.

Football fans, known as the Ultras, are the latest arrivals to Egypt's post-revolution political scene.
Last week, they founded a political party that joins different Ultras groups with one goal: to help in shaping their country's future.
Since the January 2010 uprising, Ultras groups have spearheaded the protests against military rule, and have been blamed for clashes with the security forces, though the Ultras utterly deny such accusations.

There's continual coverage on some of the Arabic channels here. It's insane, half of the police look utterly lost. One of the keepers takes an absolute pasting, and there's an enormous pile up in front of the tunnel. Horrific scenes, and staggering incompetency.

This can't really be football related.
For 70 plus people to lose their lives, I hope they were fighting over something more important than a fucking game.

Seems to be some rumours that the police were deliberately lax to allow this to happen.
