Do we really need one as it creates more hassle than it is worth. What are the benefits?

Fair point. Agree.

The benefit is to highlight the EOS to a wider audience.

But the fall outs/grief/ accusations of bias, that results in terms of selection...

Willie Darroch resigned in September:

Quote

Select Team Manager
Willie Darroch has regrettably resigned for personal reasons. League Chairman Tom Allison expressed his appreciation of Willie's work with the team.

Anyone interested in applying for the vacancy should contact the League Secretary, John Greenhorn.

I think there can be benefits from a Select team. It enhances the profile and exposure of the league; it could act as an incentive for players to go EOS; it can act as an incentive for players to 'be the best they can', whilst also rewarding the achievement of high standards; it can provide an opportunity for young players to showcase themselves to SFL clubs; formerly, it fed Scotland Semi-Pro.

So the benefits could include... league profile and awareness, player development, player encouragement/recognition, and inter-organisation relations.

Problem nowadays is the cramped calendar at club level, and a decline in equivalent opponents.

Games against the like of England C are certainly attractive... but playing SFL club sides lacks the lustre, whilst former select opponents like the Highland League have now mothballed their XIs. Other former stalwarts like the Scottish Universities and Scottish Amateurs have far more constrained programmes than previously. And SFA abolished Scotland Semi-Pro.

Personally, I think there's definetely still a place for occasional games versus other representative teams, and perhaps v clubs as warm-ups for those fixtures.

However, the Select hasn't played since facing England C in May 2010... attempts to play Livingston in autumn 2010 and 2011 got washed-out ... and maybe it can only wait for so long until it becomes redundant.

IS THAT WHAT FOOTBALL AT ANY LEVEL IS ABOUT SHOULD WE DO AWAY WITH OUR NATIONAL SIDE IS IT NOT A GREAT ADVERT FOR THE LEAGUE AND PUTS SOME PLAYERS IN THE SHOP WINDOW TO MOVE TO SENIOR LEVEL

Squad selection is always the big debate but of course one big job of a select coach is to go about watching clubs and players. I've always wondered if a Lothians v Rest game could assist in that too.

It's redundant, HJ is right,

It's not a window display anymore because no one is interested! Don't want to rake over old shit but the England C game killed it.

The pyramid is the way forward, real competition will be a true window for any of our EoS lads!

England has a pyramid system, and they have representative football at all levels... a National League System Cup for league selects below Step 6 (with its winner entering the UEFA Regions Cup); in the levels above various ad-hoc regional challenges; the England C team at Conference level; even the Football League runs an irregular U23 select.

England C represented a great challenge and stage for the players.

As a concept, it can work, IMO.

Once again I agree with you H/J,

When we get a pyramid then we can also go for ALL the other things too, well said!
