Even then a referees opinion isn't the end of the matter though, how many times have referees been asked to look at something again only to change their mind. Some players get red cards or yellow cards rescinded, others get four match bans after the fact.

If these situations the ref has got to see the incedent again from a different angle that he seen it the first time.

I see the old "we've got the worst referees" thing is being wheeled out again by people who have clearly not seen a game of football outside of this country. Refereeing is, on the whole, very good. Everywhere. ESPECIALLY considering the constant pressure put on referees by media, pundits, commentators and most of all, supporters. Mistakes are made obviously, and these are to be expected. This is all over Europe. Probably the world too, but I don't see much international football, although the African Cup of Nations seems to back it up.

If they want to avoid criticism, then why have the following escaped any sort of suspension in the last few weeks?

Van Persie elbowing Cuellar.
Lescott smashing Kaboul.
Assou-Ekotto's disgusting tackle on di Santo last night.

I'm sure I could think of more if need be.

The referees don't decide on those incidents.

Tackles are never punished retrospectively, so that rules out Asso-Ekotto's one anyway. I didn't think there was much in the van Persie one. It could have been a red card - it was borderline - but it wasn't an obvious error.

Not sure why Lescott didn't get punished yet.
