I got a new Dell laptop recently and when I specced it I added a DVB tuner card on a whim really - it was only a £30 extra. It came with a wee fold up aerial that clips on top of the laptop and I can't believe the picture quality it gets from almost anywhere with this silly wee aerial.

Attached File  Dell optimised.jpg (334.97K)
Number of downloads: 9

Picture is a wee bit blurred as characters on screen were moving as I took the still picture but the laptop picture is pin sharp and in HD if you are watching an HD channel. It gives you the ability to record programs etc and was well worth the £30!

The wireless card in the computer also has a facility to make itself a wireless point so that other computers can connect to the computer as though it were a wireless router. It switched off by default but its a handy facility for emergencys or quickly getting two laptops to talk to each other when you are not near a wireless point. I have not seen that before.
I plan on living forever! So far, so good!

Is that an XPS 15? They are bloody good laptops! Had a 17" one with 3D screen but it was overkill and now thinking of getting a new 15" because the site has free screen upgrades to the B+RGLED full HD screens at the moment.

Love the JBL/Waves speaker set up in them too.

Yes its an XPS15 with the full HD screen, i7, 6gb ram, 750gb HDD, blue ray, TV tuner. I also went for the backlit keyboard which if you spec it on the Dell site appears to be only available if you say you are a home user, rather than business.

I have been pretty impressed with it.

Am I right in thinking you can get DVB-T USB dongles which do much the same? Has anyone got experience of these?

Thanks. They don't seem to be that expensive so I might give one a go. I'd be interested if you could use one to record programmes and then play them back on a smartphone or tablet.

Now that the analogue signal is getting switched off and the digital is being boosted, a DBV-T tuner should work really well - as tonsilitis says, he gets a really good reception wherever.

Im almost certain that you could record stuff and then play it back on another device, although you would probably have to export/save the video into a compatible format. Having said that, a quick google and it seems that MythTV - PVR software that IVe seen recomended in loads of places - and Window media centre support tablet playback
