Let's rewind and look at what he actually had.
A strike partnership of Boyd and McDonald was never going to work because both of them are lazy. It is no coincidence that both were at their best for their respective OF clubs (and indeed Killie/Motherwell) when playing in a 4-4-2 with a hard-working partner.
He signed Barry Robson - a good SPL midfielder, but never a standout. He has in fact gone on to be a very good player for Middlesbrough.
Stephen McManus was a very good defender in the SPL - and perhaps less so in the Championship. He seems to be out of the picture now.
Kevin Thomson has been more or less injured the entire time. That's a shame, because he's a good player.
Lee Miller was hardly prolific in the SPL, and was a barely played at Middlesbrough.

They've got more ex-SPL players now than they did then, and are currently 4th. So no. Nice try though.

There are several strikers as good if not better than Hooper for example.

To be fair to the wee fat diver*, he was pretty much unplayable for most SPL sides during his last 18 months with United. Which is why we didn't have a hope of keeping him at the end of his contract.
As for the topic generally, I'd say an SPL XI would be fairly evenly matched with a Championship XI. United have certainly lost guys to middle/top end Championship clubs who aren't any better than the players they left behind.
* No offence, Craig, you know I love you.

Hang on, a bigger league from a much, much bigger country has more depth of talent?
I can hardly believe my own eyes.
