I agree but surely the directors at the club must wonder why they bother when a team flying high at the top of their division 8 points clear and playing excellent football can only muster 250-300 people to a home game (see earlier post). That's criminal.
We've lost many supporters since the 'takeover' but in the last couple of years the supporters trust has initiated an Airdrie Aces club which encourages youngsters to attend games and support the team through a series of attractive initiatives right through the season. This instils some loyalty to the club which hopefully will stay with them for the rest of their lives. I was taken to Broomfield by my father from about age 4 and although I didn't understand much about the game itself I got into the habit of going and eventually became a fan for life a few years later.
As someone said earlier in this thread the only way forward for many provincial clubs is to encourage local kids to support their local team by any means possible. THEY ARE the future of the club.
Good posts, weigh cider, right on the money. We sold out all our ticket allocation for the Hibs game, yet the following game against Airdrie was poorly attended -even though we're top of the league and playing well. (It might be a good idea to build up an email database of people who attend the "special" games and keep them informed about the club, along with special deals.)
We've been lamenting over the lack of support from the town for some time, but repeating the laments is a complete waste of time and energy. I agree that we badly need a new stadium - with a terracing - but we now need to develop a long-term plan to engage potential new supporters, primarily through our youth set up (families etc). Our captain Jon Robertson is a great role model for youngsters, having come through the youth system - I'm sure Jon would be an ambassador in the community in talking about the benefits the club gives to the community.
Well done to clubs like Airdrie and Stenny for their initiatives. Would you mind explaining more about what Airdrie Aces do to attract young fans? I'm sure our very committed chairman and board would be interested in what you're doing. And could a Stenny fan tell us what they're doing?
