2. Watchmen
3. Pulp Fiction
4. Semi Pro
5. Singles
I prefer soundtracks that use actual songs, rather than songs made for a film. Tarantino is the best at it IMO. The Kill Bills have some cracking soundtracking as well.

2. Goodfellas
3. Adventureland
4. The Commitments
5. Casino
Edit: I know we've had this argument before Forehead, but I would say some of Tarantino's soundtrack choices (excellent as they are) are influenced heavily by Scorcese and that throughout their careers, MS is still the boss of the unoriginal score.
Even though they're too cheesy for words, I was going to select Back To The Future or Toy Story. They do put a smile on my face

Have we? Jeez, I've had too many arguments on here! I know I argued with Ludo about Tarantino in general, wasn't sure I'd done it with the soundtracks.
It's obviously just an extension of music taste here. I just think the songs fit so well into the movies, so apt at the time(the song that Jules and Vincent walk out of the diner to is fantastic, they look like complete tools but have such a badass aura to them that the music just fits.
Maybe I need to rewatch Goodfellas or Casino but I can't recall ever getting that feeling about them. The Departed did have the Dropkick Murphys in it so that's a plus

Nah, sorry should have worded it differently. Just meant that we'd had a disagreement (I think anyway) about Tarantino and Scorcese in general, not specifically soundtrack. I had said that QT has really based a lot of his work on Scorcese and I suppose the style of his musical choices is an example of that. Undoubtably two of the best around at selecting music and I know the scene and music you mean.
You're 100% right that a good soundtrack is about timing and how it fits the scene, more than just the music itself;

Ah right yeah, I'll defend Tarantino till my feet fall off
Reservoir Dogs is just a prime example of a good movie soundtrack, a whole series on a radio station that you hear during various parts of the film, also takes part in the film with the diner scene at the start. Didn't know any of the songs before I watched the film but came out of it loving most of them. Same with Pulp Fiction actually, didn't know any of the songs there either.

Similar with the excellent ''Grosse Point Blank'' soundtrack chosen by Joe Strummer and Mini Driver acts as the local disc jockey..

The one song us used as a basis for the entire soundtrack. It's changed by using different segments of the song and changing their tempos, etc. It's still an original score however.
Personally, I find the variation that Zimmer achieves from using one piece of music quite impressive. From that one song you get nods to some of his previous work.
There's a couple of typically rousing pieces of music.
"Mombasa" has a feel of The Dark Knight soundtrack.
The whole electronic feel to the soundtrack also fits in very well with the film.
As far as original scores go, it's certainly one of the best IMO. A lot of critics have branded it "dull and mundane", however if you listen to it outside of the film then it's a fair criticism - although I do like how it has a "dull" aspect to it, rather than a cheesy uplifting soundtrack a la John Williams (not a criticism of him as he does have some very good film pieces but it gets a little bit boring after a while). Within the context of the film however, it is a thrilling soundtrack.

The only original suggestion I have is Trainspotting. Putting aside Deborah's Theme and Yesterday in Once Upon a Time in America, I can't think of a better example of use of music than this song in this scene:
I like Inglorious Basterds as well, the use of guitar music in a WW2 film is so ridiculous is somehow works.
