I know it's a cliche but any team were capable of beating another in that league. We were top of the table early on and ended up getting relegated.
Morton weren't a brilliant team and neither for that matter were Hamilton Accies...
The score remains 4-1 and counting...

Very true - we "horsed you" 2-1 (from 1-0 down) at Cappielow early in that season. It was a shadow of that performance when we lost 1-0 (Deucher, I think) at NB in our final meetingt that season.
Mother played by Peter Beardsley, Father by John Cleese.

That makes perfect sense. It is a staggering number of goals for a team who spent most of the season at the top to concede.

Where and when did the rumours emanate from? Was it simply that people sought an explanation for the collapse? Was it that some of the players were known to be fond of a bet? When did the rumours surface? As I recall, it was during their slide, but was it actually beforehand?
As I say, I'm just interested.

A mate of mine (Saints fan) who works with Royal Mail at Greenock has claimed he started the betting rumours on more than one occasion. :whistle
I'd visit a sw**ky stadium in Sc**thorpe!

That would not surprise me - it was often felt that, whilst there never was a betting thing, whoever started that rumour would have been having a right good laugh to themselves.

I'm pretty sure Clyde were 15 points behind East Stirling last season and we then overtook them in the league. They ended up finishing a point above us though.

In March 2008, Dundee Utd were 12 points ahead of Aberdeen. Aberdeen finished 1 point ahead in 4th. It was possibly the only time they were ahead of them all season too but it didn't ultimately count for anything.

2005 - 2006 season i'm sure we were 13 or 14 points(?) in front of Cowdenbeath only to finish three points behind them and lose in the play-offs. Its difficult to this day to understand what happened that season. Outrageous arse-collapse

I just checked their fixtures that season. United won 2 of their last 14 matches in the league Posted Image and earned just 3pts out of a possible 21 in their last 7 matches.

The following season they missed out on Europe on goal difference after losing their final 3 matches (the last two both 3-0) Posted Image

I'll not go in to what happened when we got into Europe though Posted Image Posted Image

Another fact was that Cowboy imposed a drinking ban on the players. This was regarded as harsh and did not do the club any favours - guys need to unwind somehow.

It couldn't have been taken on board. I worked in the James Watt at the time and there were quite a few players spending a few nights a week at least in there, during the week, particularly during the second half of the season.

Was it points or ponits - make your mind up! And I'm sure we led by 14 at one stage.

Was a painful one that - after a 6-1 defeat at NDP we bounced back with a late, late 2-1 win over Alloa. What followed was unbelievable.

Berwick 2-0 Morton - this was fancy dress day with a big following heading down. Dreadful display and the players could barely look at us at the end.
Dumbarton 3-0 Morton - one of the ugliest atmospheres ever (and it was all ticket). Fans trying to get at Cowboy at the end and Weatherson subjected to some awful abuse on being subbed.
Morton 1-4 Stenhousemuir - Stenny were bottom by a mile and came and helped themselves to 3 useless points with a thumping display and our lot looking thoroughlly shell shocked. In truth, 4-1 was kind to us.
Airdrie United 2-0 Morton - we needed Accies to lose and us to win. It happened the other way around.

I knocked back a Scotland U15's hockey trial to go to that game, not the wisest decision I've ever made.
We're Greenock Morton, we're better than you.

Second Division 1997-98:

10 February:

1 Clydebank Played 22 Points 44
2 Livingston Played 21 Points 36
9 Stranraer Played 22 Points 25

9 May:

1 Stranraer Played 36 Points 61
2 Clydebank Played 36 Points 60
3 Livingston Played 36 Points 59

Fantastic run took us into the top two for the first time on the second last saturday of the season and we finally hit the top with about ten minutes remaining of our last game when we won 1-0 at Broadwood. (20 point swing between the Bankies and ourselves)
