If you know the idea and have played in a previous P&B dead pool, fire your PMs to me with names and DOBs when you’re ready. Two changes to note :

1) You are picking FIFTEEN folk this year rather than ten.
2) You need to pick a CAPTAIN who will score you extra points should they die.

If you haven’t played before (or you want to refresh your memory), as the name suggests this is a competition where you pick 15 famous folk who you think will draw their last breath in 2012.

It’s free to enter and with no prizes other than the satisfaction of being a wee bit like the grim reaper.

There are rules:

Teams contain 15 picks. One pick is a “captain” who scores bonus points should they die.

You can’t pick the same person more than once.

The game starts at midnight on January 1st 2012 and runs until December 31st 2012. Entries have to be in before then.

People have to be sufficiently famous that their death makes a UK-based national news source such as BBC, national (not local) newspapers, Reuters UK.

Picks have to be human, real people (no soap opera characters etc) and over 18 years of age on 1/1/12.

You’re not allowed to pick people under sentence of death.

You’re not allowed to pick someone famous *purely* for being ill. This one has caused a bit of confusion before- you’re allowed to pick someone well known who has –for example- cancer, and indeed this is a good strategy. This rule is about not picking right-to-die patients or folk that are raising loads of money for charity as they’re about to die.

You’re not allowed to kill any of your picks. Murder is baaaad , mkay?

If you pick someone that’s already dead I’ll try and let you know but the overall responsibility for your team is yours.

Scoring

Each "hit" is worth a base score of 125 points minus the person's age.

BONUS OPPORTUNITIES: Couple of new ones this year

"First Blood" - First pick overall to die in the year gets bonus of 25 points for each person who had them
"Solo Shot" - If you're the only one with a pick who dies("Solo Shot"), you get a bonus of 30 points.
“Deadly duo”, 20 points for being one of two with that pick
"Rest in Peace Prize" - Ten bonus point if they won a Nobel Peace Prize.
"Deadly December" - Double base points for any score in December.
"Last Gasp" - Last pick overall to die in the year gets bonus of 25 points per person who had them.
“Captain Calamity”- 50 bonus points if your captain snuffs it.
“Unnatural causes”- 30 points if your pick is murdered, commits suicide, or dies in an accident.
"Grand Slam" - Clear your entire roster and get 1000000000000 bonus points. This won’t happen, so I don’t know why we persist with it. I’ve upped the bonus points accordingly.

In summary

PM me your 15 picks including captain, their DoBs, and their reason for fame if it’s not obvious (I know who Margaret Thatcher is) by 31st December 2011 and I should have the lists up the following day. If you want to change your squad before that point you can.

Any questions, stick them below.

Great idea, I will be waiting until Hogmanay before sending my picks :)

One suggestion, how about incorporating an extra bonus choice, whereby you have to choose someone under the age of 30 (for instance), which awards a big bonus due to the low likelyhood of their demise.

The age thing is pretty much taken into account by the normal scoring system, you'll get 95 points for someone aged 30 and 30 points for someone aged 95.

The only other rule I was going to get rid of was the double base points in December rule (even though I've benefitted from it this year), it does keep interest til the end of the year if you're not doing very well, but the guy that finished 2nd last year only got one pick right, just happened to be in December and relatively young.

Although I did look back through the previous ones (it started in 2005 but posts only go as far back as 2007) and every winner has had either the most or the joint most number of correct picks, so it tends to work OK.

Rather than everyone ask "did you get my entry", I'll post the valid entries here once I've copied them over to my spreadsheet

I'm not going to disallow picks on the grounds I've never heard of them but it's up to you to get an obit if it is someone pretty obsucure.

Anyone now who doesn't let me know their captain, I'll just put the first name on your list.

Confirmed Entrants

The Master- worth pointing out he picked Kim Jong-Il about 10 hours before his death was announced so he got a free sub in.

from the 54 teams above, 366 different celebs are "on the list", and 255 are currently unique picks.

I have a list from the 2007 edition and there were only 197 celebs in the firing line so hopefully by 31/12 we should have a fair old range of folk.

Nah. To finish last, all the candidates on your list would have to survive the year.

I'll bet I'm not going to be the only finisher on zero points

I thought I had a good one that would be a certainty for a solo shot only to just google him and find he died in 1996.

PM with picks sent, forgot to enter last year, most of who I would have picked are still alive so just had a small bit of tweaking to do.
Keaton always said, "I don't believe in God, but I'm afraid of him." Well I believe in God, and the only thing that scares me is Keyser Soze.

Hmm, that Abdelbaset al-Megrahi is a teasing b*****d - did you see that article in The Sun today? He's not on my list for this year but he's on my 2012 list. Is it too much to ask for him to hang on for another 10 days?

Bump- list of participants updated.

People who are dead and have been picked so far:

Liz Taylor
Dolores Hope
Harry Morgan

just in case anyone else is thinking of picking them.

edit: if you do pick someone else who is dead I'll let you know and you can change it, I'm not a total c**t.

I did exactly the same and i'm kicking myself... He's a cert for 2012, maybe even first to go. Is it too much to ask for a cure for cancer between now and new year?

My list is at work, and it's my last day so I had to hurry my one through today.

Last year I had a provisional list of 15 before trimming it down to 10. 2 of the 5 I cut died (Kim Jong-il and Jimmy Savile), so this year I've cut Michael Douglas from my remaining 13, and found 3 subsitutions.

If Michael Douglas dies, I'll retire from this game.

First. Entry. Ever.

I tried my best to avoid those with cancer and the like. It will be more fun that way.

I've had around half a dozen new entries since last night, will be tomorrow before I can get on my laptop and update the spreadsheet, but I had a quick skim and all the picks look OK.

Reckon there's going to be a few people sticking George Michael on their list for 2012.

"Pneumococcal infection" - ah yes, the one that just happens to be associated with barracks, boarding schools, halls of residence...and HIV sufferers. In other words, the "rumours" are true and he's toast.

Sent my list - hope everything is ok.
Keighan Parker- ""Out of all the places I've played, the biggest crowd to noise ratio I've experienced is at Ayr." Ryan Stevenson- "I managed to play for Ayr, the team i supported as a boy" Liam Tomsett-"The fans were amazing, to come all that way up there and give us that backing. I couldn't believe the way they were carrying on- it was crazy"
