Doubt that. The Dutch are huge underachievers aswell.

Not really. Depends on your criteria.

The Netherlands is very small. Getting to a WC final is a terrific achievement on that basis.

However, based on the talent at their disposal, it's not really.

I am going on talent at their disposal. They have had some of the finest footballers to play for them, yet the are not successful.

Bump.

The FA have confirmed that 184 of the 191 players they wrote to regarding Team GB are happy to be selected... with Beckham and Giggs likely as 2 of the 3 'over-agers'.

Not quite.

7 players contacted them to say they weren't interested, but not all of the other 184 confirmed that they were happy to play. They may just have chosen to ignore it.

Have the BBC just republished a press release there? Is that a news article?

Is the source BOA or FA? I'd trust neither to be factual.

Giggs said he'd only do it if he could pump Seb Coe's wife, so he's a doubt.

Statistical analysis in the book "Why England Lose" actually shows the English up as mild overachievers.

I was given this book for Christmas, but have only had the chance to read the first chapter. Seems a good book. England are among the best sides in the world, to argue against is a bit silly. As the book mentions, they have been winning close to 67% of their matches fairly consistently for 40 odd years. A team who tend to get to the world cup quarter finals and are usually put out by very good sides. Okay they're nowhere near Brazil, Spain, the Netherlands or Germany, but they're still a top team.

Well yes, especially once FIFA start trying to get rid of our national team. And I don't know about others, but I personally do not want to see players who play for team GB playing for Scotland. I doubt I'm alone in that either. As far as I'm concerned, they will have picked their nationality, and so that is who they should play for. So yes, it will continue to drag on. Blame the Brits for that, it could have been easily solved, and indeed, the Scottish, Welsh and NI associations arranged a deal where England would represent team GB picking only English players. Why couldn't they stick to that?

Has there ever been a realistic suggestion that this would happen?

In any case, it have to be postponed till after 2014, right? ;)
I [agree/disagree] with your assessment because you [praised/insulted] a [team/person] that I [support/loathe]. Furthermore, I [admire/ridicule] your writing based on the previous statement, and not on the merit of what was actually written.

Why is it shite? He wants to play in it and would be honoured if he was the captain. It's a run of the mill answer to a run of the mill question.

Sepp Blatter, 2007:

It has also emerged that last year, Fifa president Sepp Blatter stated that a Team GB could even threaten the existence of the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League.

Quoted on Fifa's own website, Blatter said: "Definitely, when London hosts the Olympics, the women's and men's team will automatically qualify to play, but they will play under the nomination of Great Britain."

He added: "It doesn't matter to us if they decide to enter as one team, but then they would lose all their current privileges. There would be no Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish national teams and leagues. Can you imagine what British football would look like?"

Blatter has contradicted himself on this over the years:

Blatter says "hey you guys, don't worry!" - http://news.bbc.co.u...les/9416122.stm

Blatter says "do it if you like... BUT BEWARE!!" http://news.bbc.co.u...all/7917624.stm

It'll fade away if it proves a one-off, as has always been promised... it'll become a problem if - for example - the BOA see it as significant enough a PR, marketing and financial success to want sides in future Games too. That's what could more realisticaly fuel problems over vice-presidencies/IFAB/voting/independent status/etc.

When will the in "credable" GB squad be selected anyway?
If Beckham and Giggs are over age picks I nominate Harry Cairney.
He is at least as credable as Beckham in that he isn't currently good enough to play for a decent team in decent league.
