You see this is the point at which you and the rational world diverge. People who think like this tend to think that the SFA and Craig Levein should, or perhaps even do, think like this too, but the truth is that they don't. The only reason they're not coming out and saying they don't is because they're humouring you. They realise you spend your hard-earned cash following the national team and don't want to alienate you by calling you "retarded", "a bit simple" or "clueless country bumpkins", but, thankfully, everyone who isn't trying to get you to renew your TA membership is happy to tell you the truth. The Olympic football tournament is an irrelevance, it seems to have ignited a fire in the bellies of a section of the Tartan Army for some reason but no-one else, perhaps David Beckham aside, cares very much. It will proceed quite inconsequentially with or without Jamie Mackie, and even in the highly unlikely event that it proceeds with him he'll still be eligible for selection for Scotland afterwards. The mendacious Sepp Blatter and an unholy Alliance of the Disenfranchised will not suddenly seize on the Olympics as a pretext for stripping the home nations of their independent status and the world will continue to revolve much as before, except for slightly increased levels of high dudgeon in Dingwall, indignation in Inverness and similar local conditions wherever else the Tartan Army gather to take libations and berate the English.

If the SFA were to cave in to your demands that any player playing for the GB team in the Olympics should be banned from representing Scotland afterwards then they'd look retarded and a bit simple. They'd look like clueless country bumpkins on a slightly bigger stage than a football message board. They'd have people pointing and laughing at them in much the same way that people are pointing and laughing at the TAMB, except without the protective veil of anonymity afforded by the internet.

And, of course, emboldened by their success in getting the SFA to bend to their narrow-minded prejudices, where would the newly-empowered TA pressure group stop? Freed from the low-level grind of harassing English-born Scotland under-19 players on Twitter, would they call for lifetime bans for Scottish international players who voted Conservative at the last election? If engagement with a "political stunt" such as the GB Olympic team is enough to bar someone from representing Scotland then, surely, espousing a political allegiance to an avowedly Unionist party is sufficient grounds, under this newly politicised selection process, to bar a few more? Personally, I think we should take the accent away from the political and just bar everyone who likes Coldplay. They're terrible. On second thoughts, if Chris Martin was banging in 20 goals a season for Man City and had a Scottish granny then I'd happily consider him...

My goodness I thought it impossible that someone could spout so many words and yet make themselves look so clueless its embarrassing

Perhaps once you avail yourself of the facts of the situation, rather than regurgitating tired auld cliches in a futile attempt at making a point then we can talk turkey, until then amigo.

I'm going to take my kids to Hampden to watch the Olympic football. Can I still keep going to Scotland games? Or do I have to wear some sort of sign on me to show I'm not true tartan army?

I would have thought so, I may toddle along myself for a game or two and dont plan on wearing any signs at the Serbia game in September.

I think you may be mistaking Scotland fans stance on Team GB as anti-Olympics, which of course it isn't.

I think you may be having delusions of grandeur and assuming you speak for all Scotland fans.

Your phrase appears to be missing the words "majority of".

You seem better than that.

There's only one side issuing hyperbole instead of "fact", and it isn't Frankie S.

What are the facts? Any threat to home nations football - apparently something Jamie Mackie has called for an end to - is perceived and inferred. It has not been implied, stated or threatened in any way. Which leaves most rational thinkers to believe it doesn't exist.

The fact is, Team GB is happening, and if any Scotland player is deemed good enough - and there's a serious doubt about that - they will be selected and they will play. And then they will play for Scotland. Somebody like Barry Bannan is probably as likely as anyone to be chosen.

OK if you want to be picky, "vast majority of Scotland fans", which makes little difference to the point.

Oh I think so, his post was so full on anti Tartan Army cliche it was cringeworthy.

Team GB is undoubtedly happening, that was the agreement between the English FA and the other three UK nations, to field the team but to select only English players, I'm personally OK with that. However it seems like the BOA are sabre rattling and want to select players out with England despite this agreement.

I dont want to get into a tit-for-tat debate on this as I wont change your opinion, however when Sepp Blatter says its not a good idea to field a combined team, when David Will, FIFA VP for 17 years (sadly no longer with us) says its something the SFA should stay well clear of, as does David Taylor and Andy Roxburgh both involved with UEFA, when the Welsh FA Secretary tells us that a combined GB team has been talked about amongst delegates at FIFA conferences during his tenure, when there is a power struggle within FIFA where anything goes, where Asian and Africa Confederations want more WC qualifying places from UEFA and as such 4 UEFA voting members reducing to 1 could be an attractive prospect.

When you look at all that (and more), is it really worth the risk for an U23 tournament? The vast majority of Scotland fans don't think so, and thankfully neither do the SFA. Let the English get on with it and leave us out.

Any Scottish player who plays for team GB should be thanked and wished the best of luck with their new nationality. I believe FIFA don't allow players to have two nationalities.

Disregarding the politics - which is difficult I appreciate - anything that needs the word 'Team' in front of it sounds awfully plasticky, artificial and American.

And anything that Seb Coe and Rangers fans are for must be bad.

The politicians and BOA do seem to be making a big deal of this. Rather odd that they now find it such a big deal when the BOA haven't included a GB football team for many years.

Actually I'd have said most Gers fans were like me - cringe at the name 'Team GB' and think Olympic football is inconsequential.

However, when you read stuff like this regarding Naismith's interest in playing in the Olympics then we change somewhat:

Hamish Husband, spokesman for the Association of Tartan Army Supporters Clubs, said: "What you have is a misguided player putting personal vanity ahead of the future of his national team.

Team GB? The fake money making hype of the EPL mixed with the chauvinistic hysteria of an England game add the meaninglessness of Olympic 'soccer' and top it up with a dash of the patronising disregard for the opinions of other 3 countries.

Yeah. Im a fan. <_<
Keep calm, follow on.

Most football fans in general are not that bothered by it no matter how much Coe and the BOA try to hype it up. There is definitely an element of Rangers fans who have bought into it for daft quasi political reasons. Probably the same trumpets that think they're making a statement, walking down Sausage Roll Street in an England shirt.

Let it be known, I don't care who supports whatever team and if Naismith thinks this will be good for his career then fire away I say.

Better let him know foreign refs don't like diving, moaning, cheating fuds either though.

I really do hope those who are the first to throw insults like insular, retarded etc around and seem to speak with absolute certainty on the future of the independent home nations are right.

I fear they may be wrong, but them I'm obviously just being parochial
