The old 'he's not as good for Scotland as he is for Man Utd' argument might come down to the fact that with Scotland he plays with some guys who can't read a book nevermind a pass.

Well, yes, exactly. that was my point

It's not that Darren Fletcher isn't a good player. He is Scotland's best player. It's that playing with Manchester United makes him look better.

Paul Lambert went from being a decent Motherwell midfielder to a Champions League winner in what, 4 seasons, then back to Celtic where he looked OK again.

Was Paul Lambert a superstar? No

Was he a good player? Yes.

He found a niche in a very good team and performed a valuable role as a defensive midfielder. His career was defined by being picked up by Dortmund at a good time and doing an excellent job in a team where he was asked to do a basic job and let the good players play. Much like Darren Fletcher at Man Utd.

I agree with this. Although its difficult to compare players in different eras and positions, for me Fletcher is by far the best player Scotland has.
We just need to actually use him correctly in the national team. Something we have failed to do in the majority of games hes played for us.
Having said that, I love his attitude. Its the attitude any player should have... Ill play wherever Im needed. I love his commitment and desire. Theres a few players who could learn from that.

McAllister suffered from the same thing.

Wasn't he playing in a midfield with Paul Lambert and John Collins?

Not by the end of his Scotland career when the Scotland fans were booing him. Its wasn't just the midfielders though, the strikers weren't on his wavelength either.
His last game for Scotland (as far as I recall ) was against The Czechs at Parkhead where he was booed off the park.

He went on to play a blinder for Liverpool the next season helping them win the UEFA cup.

Yes Sir Alex is well known for giving mediocre players big contracts.... I have to wonder if the folk that slag Fletcher actually watch Scotland games at all, let alone Man Utd games.

The guy is pure class, the work and organisation he does off the ball is nearly enough to pick him never mind the array of passing ability, it isnt his fault the Scotland team around him is full of diddies who couldn't read a pass if they're life depended on it.
