Just got a new fangled phone. Can anyone one explain how the data allowance works out? On my curent tarrif I get 250mb of data allowance. This doesn't seem much. Only would be using it for here and mibbe's a bit of facebook. Would I need to change tarriffs to avoid heavy bills?

He hoped and prayed that there wasn't an afterlife. Then he realized there was a contradiction involved here and merely hoped that there wasn't an afterlife. Arthur, before nearly destroying the Universe.

Prob be more than enough, unless you youtube a lot or i-player, sky mobile etc. Even radio thru internet uses a lot.
I prob use 30/40 gigs a month (conservative estimate

I upgraded from 250mb to 750mb per month as 250 was nowhere near enough for me. That's probably something to do with me not having a PC the now and browsing P&B and facebook on my phone almost every day mind you.

Cheers mate! Exactly the advice I was looking for. Do you use these sites a lot daily? Tell me to f off if that's being nosey. Just trying to judge what I would need data wise.Mostly online at home right enough but that was before I got the new phone. It could change and prevent thedaily battle with the kids for bandwidth

If you're only going to be visiting web pages, i.e here, Facebook, BBC etc, then I'd imagine 250MB would be enough, but not by much. I'd also check to see how often your phone is synced to refresh things like Facebook, email etc - if your phone is going to sync say, every minute, that will eat into your allowance as well.
However, if you're going to use YouTube, Internet radio or download music files etc, then you'll need a bigger allowance. TuneIn radio (which is a fantastic app by the way), if you listen to a 128kbps stream for an hour, will use roughly 60MB.

This might sound and be stupid to say but, can't you just use your wifi in your house when you are there instead of your mobile network on the phone? I know that sounds stupid but when the other half is on the pc at home I ues the wifi in the house on my mobile.

if you use the wifi in your house then 250mb should be enough
i have 250mb a month and i have 5 regular websites which i visit when on breaks in work etc, never once went over my allowance
if you do plan to use youtube etc then rule of thumb is 1minute of video is roughly 1mb of data

I've had a smartphone since the summer and was torn between whether to take the 100MB or 500MB packages when I got it. Went for the higher option to be on the safe side as it was only an extra £4 a month but in fact I've found I wouldn't have needed it. In the months since I've generally averaged about 80MB a month with only one month going (barely) over the 100MB. Mind you that's because it uses available Wifi at home and in the office so anytime I happen to use it in either place it isn't counting against me.
Inevitably it depends what you do though. I don't download things onto it nor listen to music on it and I'm not on Facebook. I only use occasional P&B / BBC website access plus I sometimes do the matchday live updates for the club website on it. It's no coincidence that by miles my heaviest usage is at away games.

PAYG on GiffGaff (I know
)
I pay £10 for 250 minutes any network, unlimited texts & unlimited internet (yes unlimited as long as you aren't tethering).
Free SIM & £5 credit when you buy your first top-up
It is owned by Telefonica, so if you're on O2 or Tesco mobile the sim will work on phones locked to their networks and only takes a couple of days to transfer your number.
If you get one you need to buy a "Goodybag" to get the deal. It's all on their website.

Same concern here. I'm taking a new contract with Three, over 24 months and the options are 1GB of internet, 500 minutes, 2000 texts for 20 quid, or unlimited internet, 2000 minutes, 5000 texts for 27 quid.
Most online stuff is done either at home or at work, and I'm not one for Facebook so is 1GB reasonable?

The BBC will lie to you. Where they cannot lie they will misreport. What they cannot misreport they will ignore.

1Gb should be fine. Install 3G Watchdog. Its an app that monitors your data usage and will warn you when you are getting close to your limit (you have to set your limit and the cut off date eg 1st of the month)
