Quote

"Unfortunately," Scott Paterno said, "once that happened, there was really nothing more Joe felt he could do because he did not witness the event. You can't call the police and say, 'Somebody tells me they saw somebody else do something.' That's hearsay. Police don't take reports in that manner. Frankly, from the way he understood the process, he passed the information on to the appropriate university official and they said they were taking care of it. That's really all he could do."

yes you can.

paterno's been fired.

the reaction on campus has been to riot. how fucking stupid are these people? even celtic fans wouldn't go that far to defend someone who enabled a child abuser.

i said a few months ago on the ncaa thread that college football is the most corrupt sport in the world and incidents like this sum up why. the coaches are gods in their own fiefdoms and quite often the highest paid government employee in the state. success is easy to come by due to cupcake scheduling and the ridiculous amount of bowls that can be played in plus the ludicrous poll system. because the players change all the time and don't have a great media profile all the credit for success goes towards the cult of the coach.

there is also a clear power imbalance between the coaches who earn millions and the players who earn nothing and are dependent on th coach for their scholarships. the administrations are usually toothless as well because they are only interested in pleasing rich boosters who are usually close to the coach.

it's fucked.

Sounds like a ridiculously dodgy system.

Big Joe did know - the only thing he did was tell PSU's president, and they all hid it together (and continued to allow the Paedophile to use PSU building to abuse the kids)

Now the latest rumors are that the guy basically prostituted the kids to raise funds.

It isn't on anything official, as there would be more chance of lawsuits if not true - but if you have a look at blogs it's there. Also just word of mouth - as you'd guess, it's a huge story in the area.

I wasn't disputing it, just hadn't heard.

This story is sounding worse and worse the longer time goes on.

Jerry Sandusky phoned into a news show in the US the other day, and his defence against the alleged rape in the showers in 2002 was (and I quote) "we were just horsing around" before going on to say that it was just "horseplay"

Facepalm.

Public confessions don't get much more ridiculous than that. In fact, that's almost up there with OJ's "This is how I would have murdered them if I'd done it" shambles a few years ago in the 'confessing without confessing' stakes.

Here's most of the interview:

It misses out the bit where he repeats the question out loud, a couple of times, before finally answering.
