West Barns Star travel to Moffat to play Upper Annandale and Lochar Thistle are on their travel to Border country to play Gala Rovers! Although not a Border side East Linton play Terregles. Cracking games for the neutrals but here's hoping for a few Dumfriesshire wins.

Should be a very competitive round of games. Hawick Legion aren't great this year so will struggle against a (usually) strong Lochmaben side but I feel Pencaitland will have far too much for them in the next round. The West Barns game looks as though it could be a tight one as Uppers are always a strong outfit that are capable of scoring goals. As for the Lochar - Gala tie; after Gala's result on saturday no-one could really put Lochar as favourites but they have always given the top BAFL sides a tough game up here so it will be interesting to see how they fare up this time. Lochar are obviously in confident mood, being unbeaten this season, so they will be going up to Gala with every expectation of getting a result.

As a side note, the Gala vs Lochar game could well be the first game on the new 3G pitch in Gala. Although there are rumours that the Border Sports & Leisure Trust won't allow Gala Rovers to play on it that day as it coincides with the Scottish Cup tie of Gala Fairydean... which of course is away from home!

I agree that Lochmaben will probably beat Hawick Legion in the first round, however I am the same as ?????? that Pencaitland will be too strong for Lochaben, even if they are at home! However, I may be wrong, as we have never played Lochmaben and dont really know the team that well.

It depends on which West Barns side turns up against Uppers, if West Barns are at full strength, then I think that they may sneak it! However, Moffat is a very tough place to go, we have been there the last two years and came away with hard fought victories.

Gala Rovers v Lochar will be a great one for the neutral, if Gala are at full strength then I would expect them to get through, especially at home! Lochar are no mugs though, DDAFL champs and a very strong side. We had a very tough game against them last season, the sending off being the turning point in the game.

Big day tomorrow with Lochar travelling through to meet Gala Rovers (not heard from Gala so assuming the weather ok ). Lochar's plans been disrupted by injury to 1 player, suspension of another and another finishing community service. Notice that Gala are flying high in the Border League so with home advantage will start as favourites. We'll give it a go and look forward to the day out. Party of 35 travelling by both bus and car.

Weather in the Gala area has been ok(ish) this week, which will help as the pitch looked very heavy last week. It looks to be relatively dry and mild tomorrow so should be a good day for watchin footy. The game promises to be competitive and hopefully full of good football from both sides.

I dont think it is quite as cut and dry as Grassroots suggests it might be...

Gala Rovers 4-2 Lochar Thistle

Turbo got his predictions well wrong as this turned out to be a good close game between 2 top sides. Overall i would say Gala just deserved there victory. Lochar had the better chances early doors but couldn't convert 3 good opportunities while wee Dez? went close for Gala. Lochar did go ahead through a penalty midway through the first half but were pegged back with a well taken goal by Dez. No more scoring in the first half as both teams cancelled each other out, with the pitch not doing too many favours for both teams. Lochar struck first in the second half when a long ball caught the home defence out and our left midfielder broke through and slotted home. The scores were level again when Lochar gave away a silly penalty and the centre half stroked the penalty home. As the game entered the final 20 mins it was Gala who looked the most threatening with Lochar trying to play on the break. Gala went ahead for the first time when the away side were caught sleeping at a Gala sub and Dez found space in the box to head home. As Lochar pushed for an equaliser they were given hope when Gala's No.8 headbutted a Lochar striker, the matters were made worse when the Gala linesman raced onto the park and squared up to the Lochar striker. Both offenders were quite rightly dismissed. As Lochar looked to draw level Gala scored there 4th on the counter attack to seal the tie. Incidentally it was wee Dez that scored to complete his hat trick.

A good day from a Lochar point of view apart from the result, although credit to Gala who were a very good side who will probably go along way in the cup. We tried to man mark wee Dez but he showed how good a striker he is with a good hat trick. Impressed with the left back as well. Felt the no 4 and 5 at the back were the weak link but we couldn't punish their mistakes early doors.
Little bit disappointed with the food (paltry cold buffet) and hospitality on offer after the game with near 30 people back at the Reivers, especially after being treated so well over the years at places like Leithen, Duns, Tweeddale, but a lot of boys ended up at the chippy round the corner.

Final word for the referee who i thought had an excellent game. The best i've seen in Borders ever (every year they seem to be shocking) but the guy (don't know name) from Jedburgh got every decision correct considering the conditions. Bookings, penalty shouts (1 boy from Gala booked for diving) and red cards all justified.

Quite A fair report on the game, I have to agree that Dez played well as did the left back. Your also spot on about 4 & 5 being the weak links in the team, there getting on a bit now and were there for the taking.
I'm sorry that the spread back at Reivers wasn't as good as you would have liked.
Lochar are a very good side who would give any team a very difficult game, they also play some nice football and I wish them all the best for the rest of the season

After reading my report again, it looks a bit disrespectful to the Gala no 4 and 5. Certainly wasn't meant like that. Just felt on the day with the conditions it was recipe for disaster for defenders. Could see that the big shane guy has been good in his hey day!!

to be fair, he still is Probably, in fact, definitely one of the best players that has ever graced the Border Amateur Leagues in recent times.

Although you guys played well on the day, you never threatened our goal too much; your penalty was just a coming together of legs (fair decision tho) and the second was a long ball where the defence stopped as there were a couple of men in offside positions.

The game on Saturday at Lochmaben was a good advert for the South Cup, both teams tried to play football on a wet and soggy surface.

Always thought Pencaitland looked a wee bit stronger and fitter than the Lochmaben lads.

Also worth noting that Pencaitland played for 75 minutes with 10 men and only had two subs, so couldnt make any changes during extra time.

We equalised with less than 10 minutes to go with a rasper of a free kick, fully 40yards out from our very own Joe Harper (Marc Mc)

Deano also scored a screamer to win the match in the 2nd half of extra time.

Sounds like both Gala and Pencaitland had difficult games, but the important point is were both through to the next round.

We threatened a lot in the first half but not much in the second. 3 of Gala's goals were avoidable- 1st we were caught sleeping at free kick, 2nd silly tackle for penalty, 3rd we were confused who to mark after you made a sub and the 4th you broke on the break when we pushed for leveller. But hey fair play i thought Gala edged it so good luck!

Pencaitland won playing with 10 men for the whole game or about 105 mins to be approx . Yes and won it in extra time. Would have been done and dusted after 90 if had 11.
