Stuart Pearce is coach for team GB. For anyone still under the illusion this was a GB team this must surely let you know the thinking behind it. The most successful UK coaches are Scottish, yet they still go for the England U21 coach. Mr England himself.
Also the England Womans coach takes on the Womans team.

I agree with you about scottish managers doing very well.

However, most of these managers are currently in employment and will be busy getting their teams ready for the following season, thus being far to busy to take on the GB olympics team.

I imagine if they could get Fergie, Moyes Etc they would.

He's a shite manager too. At least we know they won't be troubling the medals.

Yes but how many Scottish managers do you have to pass by before you get to Stuart Pearce.

Stuart Pearce is a terrible choice. Was there anyone else in the running for it? I quite liked the idea of beckham as a player manager.

I don't think there would be many Scottish managers putting themselves forward for it to be fair.

Who do you suggest they should have approached?

Bear in mind it had to really be someone employed by one of the home nations FAs. You aren't going to go out and hire someone just to coach the Olympic football team.

Beckham is a decent shout actually... maybe a wee taste of management before he hangs up his boots.

He hasn't done a particuarly bad job with the under 21's.

Anyone But TeamGB.

An excellent choice of manager, they'll fail miserably with him in charge, so it's all good.

I fail to see why this is a surprise or a problem?

It's an u23 tournament (with a couple of overage players). It was inevitably going to fall to the u21 coach of one of the countries to manage it and given the opposition to involvement from many of the other three it was never going to not be the English one. Pearce was an absolute given to be handed the role.

Also, whether he's a bad manager or not is debatable but irrelevant. He's done a half decent job with England's u21's and seems an entirely competent appointment. I'd certainly rather he got it than Billy bloody Stark.

As per usual this is a no win situation. The "we don't want Team GB" campaigners will say they didn't want involved but moan that a Scot wasn't asked. If by chance one had been asked they'd say it was just political correctness.

I'd like to see them commit to having at least 3 players from each nation in the squad. With at least one from each nation in the starting eleven.

It will never, ever, happen though.

Why? It's not some sort of ethnic equality celebration event. The best players available should be picked. There would be Scottish and Welsh players among that (not sure about NI), but they should be picked on merit.

That's all theoretical though, because I don't expect any Scottish players to choose to take part.

At first I thought you wanted a serious debate but your 2nd post shows you're at the wind up.

Simply because thats what i'd like to see, on a personal, selfish note.

I'm glad it's a all England management team, hopefully all players selected are English also.

I don't want to see Scotland taking any part in this TeamGB nonsense

Exactly.. it's very amusing.

The "not in my name" lot now want to bemoan the coach choice.

Why is it any different to Gary Speed being given the Wales job?

As noted, it's an Under 23 plus guests tournament, so the manager is going to be either someone in the squad on a P/M basis or someone in the FAs' hierarchy.

Not all of us.

I want nothing to do with any TeamGB and I'm more than happy for an Englishman to lead them to failure.

I'd imagine the arch Scotland hating element of the Rangers support will be disappointed that Watty hasn't got the gig (whether or not he actually wanted it or not).

Exactly. Klinsmann, beckenbaur, rijkaard, van basten are just a few examples of managers without experience being given big jobs. I hardly think the GB Olympic team compares to either the dutch or german national team.

I think it wouls be a good place for beckham to cut his teeth. It would also really raise the profile of olympic football in the uk.
