Talk on Sportsound this evening has been that Sion may be reinstated and UEFA could put them into a 5 team group.

I can't see Athletico, Rennes or Udinese being too happy with this set up. It really is a shambles. Thoughts on this?

They mentioned it on Radio Scotland. Fucking hell, they've made an absolute tits of this one. IF Sion are reinstated, the group will be playing the additional fixture well into the winter.

In reality, I expect that CAS will tell Sion to f**k off. If not, the potential fall-out is massive.

A turd of such epic proportions it has to be released in three installments. The first can stand on its own as a complete adventure. The second links to the first, but has a dark, inconclusive feel generating an air of foreboding and leaving itself wide open for an unknown ending. The final chapter has drama, excitement and moments where you think all is lost. A grand battle is waged where good overcomes evil and peace is restored in your gut.

It's supposed to be in the "unlikely" event of Sion winning the case. It's UEFA that sent it to CAS, I don't know if Sion have agreed. They might want to continue on their choosen route.
It does seem a bit strange, given UEFA previously being adamant they were right.

I believe Sion have accepted that it can go to CAS, so they must feel they have a chance here. After all UEFA have been saying all along that they were definitely out and that no way would they be allowed back into the competition, yet here are UEFA planning for that exact outcome. To me this looks like UEFA backing down. Originally I thought Sion were pursuing this with one eye on compensation, but when you think of it, 3 (and I presume it is 3, you wouldn't have Sion versus Celtic would you? That would be even crazier) Europa league games with massive television presence will coin them a pretty purse.

The solution put forward here is just utterly ridiculous.

It wasn't the just the phone in. It was broken as a news story after appearing on UEFA's website.

Could this just be a way of UEFA trying to encourage Sion to go for CAS and CAS alone, by making it appear that they're potentially starting a retreat? And also making it look to CAS as they're not being arrogant, by suggestion a potential provision if Sion win?

For the reasons I outlined, UEFA cannot abide Sion winning.

And a 5-team group looks rather unworkable? As things stand, that's an extra game for each of the 4 current participants, and 4 games for Sion, to be shoe-horned into a few weeks from Christmas till mid-February. Spain, for example, already have every date earmarked domestically.

If the Swiss domestic Courts are refusing to arbitrate then what choice do they have?

sion don't have to go to cas.

constantin seems up for a scrap, going to cas would be taking a step back. he and sion will recieve more protection in the swiss legal system.

Double blow for Sion today... First, the Vaud cantonal court rejected their requests for execution measures against UEFA regarding ongoing Group I matches. Second, the 4 existing Group I clubs have petioned CAS to become participants in the arbitration. Interesting developments.

Please excuse my stupidity but I have no idea what that means. Can someone please explain to me, using small words and big pictures, what's going on with this?

Sion were attempting to have UEFA forced to reinstate them to the tournament in line with the court's current stance: in the same way you could have a court order to make someone do something that a court had ordered them to do. They didn't get it, however.

The 4 clubs entering the arbitration complicates things, as they'll be claiming themselves as parties who would be disadvantaged by Sion being reinstated. So it would become more than just UEFA v Sion, who is right... it'd widen to consider the consequences of reinstating Sion upon other innocent parties.

[1] Sion tried to have the court force UEFA to put them into the tournament, even as rapidly as making them play Rennes, tonight. But the court did not make a demand of UEFA to do that. A comparison (perhaps not too accurate) would be giving someone an eviction notice, but not sending round baillifs to have them removed.

[2] CAS now has to consider the impact of reinstating Sion, not just who of UEFA / Sion is right (and if Sion is right - reinstate them). The 4 clubs are now saying "consider the impact on us, all innocent clubs, if you decide that Sion should be reinstated".

UEFA say to Sion - "You break rule! Hop it!"
Sion go to Court - "hey, Court! You go tell UEFA he take me back!"
Four clubs say to Court - "If you tell UEFA he take Sion back, we hurt and we sue!"
Court say to Sion - "Hop it!"
Simples?

If Sion are reinstated then there will be further problems. If there is a group of 5 then if Sion qualify there is nothing stopping the third placed club suing UEFA. If there is a play-off then unless they play against Celtic who have little chance of qualifying then the opponents can sue UEFA in case of defeat. But where? Will the Swiss courts listen to every case brought by every club in Europe?.
Should Sion be reinstated then not one fan from the other teams should attend the matches, UEFA should be responsible for all the costs incurred including injuries to players, all yellow and red cards should be rescinded and all Swiss clubs should be excluded from European competition for the next 100 years. Should this be declared illegal then all English teams who were banned from Europe following the Heysel Disaster should sue UEFA for damages plus interest. This would give Norwich a fair sum of money to build a team.

If they rule in Sions favour they should just guarantee them a place in next seasons group stages. Anything else would be madness

It'd at least be a less logistically / competitively damaging solution, though I'm sure the combination of clubs bumped a round early in qualifiers (including 1 who misses the group), would be unhappy.

if they did reinstate them then why not count the 2 Sion v Celtic results from August as they were part of the competition, Celtic would then have played 5 of their 8 games and there would be time to play all the other ties before the last 32 in February.

The Group would then stand as follows
.........................P.........Pts
Udinese..............3.........7
Ath Madrid..........3.........4
Sion...................2.........4
Celtic.................5..........3
Rennes..............3..........2
