In a move that will sadden all political satirists and point and laugh merchants, Palin has decided not to run for US president.

Quote

Mrs Palin said in a statement that the decision came after much thought, and that she and her husband, Todd, "devote ourselves to God, family and country".

Bit of a shame, I had looked forward to her and the equally loathsome, hateful and off her nut Bachmann running for office. Instead the only real bit of fun in the race will come from Rick Perry who will uphold the right wing nutjob standard. This is the man who recently said America should send troops into Mexico to stop drugs getting into the US.

With Bachman, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul still in the running, satirists will continue to have their scripts for free...

Bachmann is still in the race technically, but she's not going to be on the ballot come the time. She's there purely for the tea party to have a racist homophobe isolationist flag waver in the media during the run up. In the last 3 months or so she's hardly been in Washington, instead choosing to do publicity stunts around the country. I believe her voting record in the last 6 months is round about 30%. That's incredible considering she was elected to represent her state. Instead she just gets paid to take jollies and preach her hate filled fuckwittery to the window lickers of America's right wing.

Has anyone seen the Rick Perry 30 second clip for his campaign? It looked like it was directed by Michael Bay or something. Epic as f**k.

The fact that any President usually needs to be a God botherer would be given an interesting twist given that this God botherer believes in the writings of a book supposedly translated by one guy from plates buried under New York.

While America's economy provided some likeihood of Obama having a close fight on his hands... the Osama Bin Laden kill mission has dispelled any notion that there will be a contest next year.

I reckon Palin is keeping her powder dry as very few Presidents don't get a 2nd term. Certainly none with as handsome a victory as Obama got last time.

Next time the Democrats will have to find a new candidate, one who she will almost certainly have a higher profile than, and she'll put a lot more effort into getting her name on the ballot that time.

I haven't felt this good since James McFadden scored against France in 2007

Apparently the estimated figure for the spending of campaigning is supposed to be around $1 Billion.

It's not actually the cock-up that makes her dangerous. Anyone, even a politician, can say something stupid. What marks her and right-wing authoritarians out in general as being truly dangerous is their pathological inability to admit to wrongdoing. It's far more serious than just trying to look good without admitting that you've made a mistake. It's that lying in these circumstances is actively considered to be a good thing, rather than just a tool to avoid the bad thing of admitting that you're wrong. So when challenged on this she continues to spin and lie instead of just stating the obvious. The old adage, "When the facts change, I change my mind" simply does not apply to right-wing authoritarians, because they truly and honestly consider themselves to be above external reality.

Tl;dr version: 'baggers see it as a virtue to deny reality and 'stick to your guns' in the face of 'elitist' things like facts and evidence.

Also, there's no way Rick Perry can win the general election. For one thing he's of such mediocre intelligence that even in the relatively challenge-free environs of a Republican debate he struggles. Against Obama he would be completely out of his league. Secondly, for all that the stereotype of 'baggers is true, they still represent around a fifth of the population - and the other four fifths actually enjoys having things like Medicare and roads (even if they won't admit it.) All Obama has to do is say, "Perry wants to take away your Medicare!" and he's won a second term. For this reason Mittens is a far more likely candidate.

You may find it hard to believe that the Republicans can discount a candidate for being too right-wing but it's true.

There was an arictle in the paper a few weeks ago saying that a muck-raker was writing a book about Palin which alleges that she snorted coke and smoked marijuana with her husband and also had numerous affairs. Apparently she had a penchant for black men, although she didn't like employing them on her staff.

Also in the paper yesterday was Rick Perry getting reamed for repeatedly hiring the sensitively titled, ahem, 'Niggerland' ranch in Texas for hunting over a period of 20 years, ending a couple of years ago.

You know your stuff Swampy, so what's your views (and perhaps the views from the wider population) on Herman Cain?

The only things I've caught on him were the Florida straw poll result and his "joke" about legislation being too long to read over the dinner table.

Economically, he's generally a big business Republican (as opposed to an ideological 'bagger Republican like Bachman). Big business Republicans will fiercely strive to maintain the status quo (given that it's so business-friendly), and make small gestures towards ending social programs, but without the burning zeal of the 'baggers.

Socially, he's just another authoritarian. Doesn't like the gays, doesn't like the immigrants, doesn't like the Muzzies. This plays well with the Republican base, needless to say, who at this point are similarly narrow-minded. The fact that he's some kind of senior goddist (not sure what denomination - I'd be surprised if it was a mainstream one) also helps.

It's extremely unlikely that he'll carry the nomination. It would take something very special on the debate circuit, some massive concessions to the Midwest, and a Romney collapse, for that to happen.

Is that like a Disneyland kind of theme park thing? Makes you wonder what he was hunting.
