The Carling Cup gets started tonight with a few decent looking ties. The matches at West Ham, Charlton, Crystal Palace and Bristol City have been called off due to the riots.

Leeds vs Bradford and Sheffield Wednesday vs Blackpool are the two games live on the telly.

Palace and Bristol City off too. Wasn't surprised at that decision with them being in the Croydon area and there being trouble in Bristol too.

Bristol City v Swindon also being a derby, easy decision for the police. Sadly I think a lot of other games tonight and come the weekend will also be called off. Can't argue though, peoples safety, homes and businesses must come first.

I think the weekend games will depend on whether the situation improves from tonight and has petered-out come Friday, or whether it continues to worsen. Certainly it's sensible to postpone tonight's games in London/other existing flashpoints.

As far as the winners of the competition are concerned, I would rate Man United as the favourites.

Chelsea won't probably take it seriously with a foreign manager, Man City never do take it seriously, Arsenal still struggle with their youngsters and the majority of other sides prefer to focus on the league.

Ferguson has always traditionally given the youngsters a chance in this, and he's bought quite a few new youngsters. This will be their chance to prove themselves.

As per usual, there's been a few upsets in tonight's 1st round games...

Barnsley 0-2 Morecambe
Bury 3-1 Coventry
Derby 2-3 Shrewsbury
Hull 0-2 Macclesfield
Ipswich 1-2 Northampton
Portsmouth 0-1 Barnet

Burnley/Burton and Forest/County amongst those going into extra time.

Forest/County going to pens after Forest equalised in the last minute of extra time. McClaren's boys will count themselves very lucky if they get through this.

EDIT: Forest scrape through 4-3 on pens. 3-3 after extra time.

Usual Carling Cup night with some big name Championship teams struggling.
Derby put a full team out and lost to Shrewsbury. Little teams in England love the early stages of the Carling Cup.

The Forest vs County game must have been electric. First competitive derby between the two in ages with 6 goals and a penalty shoot-out.

Bristol Rovers vs Watford has been called off on police advice. Just Oxford/Cardiff going ahead tonight now.

Leeds v Bradford is a pretty tasty derby. Been to a few over the years although I was surprised they picked it as a live game with City really struggling these days. Turned out nip and tuck in the end though.

I had Bury on my line to beat Coventry but Sheffield United cost me a packet in only drawing at Hartlepool. Always shocks in this round although some of the Championship clubs do tend to put out weakened teams.
