Nah you're too easy and way too much fun...Looks as if Deky is bored of you so i'll stick around for a while.

Just out of interest have you even realised the obvious error Banterman made?

made an arse of what?

  • Rangers last year were a very good team
  • I cannot safely say that about the current Rangers mob
  • the difference of course, is Walter Smith. teams are more than just colelctions of players, it;s the manager which really makes the difference
  • Thus, i can say rangers last year were very good, but not this year becuase they are missing a key component in what made them so good.
What's the problem with that?

I [agree/disagree] with your assessment because you [praised/insulted] a [team/person] that I [support/loathe]. Furthermore, I [admire/ridicule] your writing based on the previous statement, and not on the merit of what was actually written.

Nothing at all and we agree on all of the above...well nearly all...i still don't think we were a very good team last season BUT that is not how you worded your original post.

You said 'A fine Rangers team..Led by their greatest manager'. Agreed?

I disagreed and said they were not a fine team but Smith got the best out of them...i think we agree on this?

Therefore it is wrong to call them 'a fine team'.

It really is not that important an issue and i think 2 pages is more than it really deserves

No I;d say they weren;t a fine group of players, but that's different from team, and Smith was a part of that. the team, that is

But yeah, No worries, let's get back on topic Butcher, Davies or McCall?

For what it's worth I don't think McCoist will make a success of it, but there's big difference with having an opinion and simply being dismissive. And after only 2 games of the season, recent history should tell us that it's utter folly to write anyone off before August even begins.

I see comparisons are being made with John Grieg who took over in 1978, just as Billy McNeil took over Celtic at the same time. The comparison doesn't go very far actually, because Greig actually did okay in his first season, taking Rangers to the EC quarter-finals (beating Juventus & PSV no less) and only just missed out on the Treble. The decline really only set in after that season.

Where the comparison may be valid is that Greig inherited an ageing squad that he remained very loyal to and ultimately lost control of. But the difference is that McCoist is making a bad start and may yet turn it around. A bad start is effectively a mandate to change things.

To answer the question though, I'd agree that Billy Davies is the likeliest candidate, but if a proper crisis sets in, then a club often turns to a former legend and sometimes someone not even in management at the time. Wouldn't surprise me if Gough came back and brought in McCall as assistant. I'm actually a bit surprised he didn't get into management when he stopped playing.

I fear for the cheeky chappy after being pumped out of The Champions Leauge by a second rate Swedish outfit despite retaining the majority of Walters team.

Gough managed Livingston. Although McCoist hasn't got off to the greatest of starts and Malmo was a massive disappointment he still has plenty of time to get a bit of consistency in our play. Even if we don't win the title, early days yet,i feel McCoist will get a second season to turn it around. People should wait until he has his own signings in and see what transpire over the course of the season. One thing that worries me though is the backroom staff,John Brown and Neil Murray along with Durrant it seems to be an old pals act. Personally i would have liked to have seen some who is respected throughout Europe and has many contacts on the continent as chief scout,Arthur Numan.

Yep, forgot about Livi, although Lambert flopped there and was able to resurrect his career.

Sometimes old pals acts work actually. Indeed most successful managerial teams are based on friendships established as players. If I was in McCoist's position, I'd seriously think about bringing in a coach who specialises in defence. That would meaning ditching someone now. A manager doesn't have to be a coach - he has to be the one making the difficult decisions. Of course, sometimes it's easier doing that at a new club first.

The thing about McCoist though is he has worked with Smith for a long time,at both Scotland and Rangers, and isn't a young manager he's almost fifty. Smith was 43 when he took the job,Stein was 43 or 44 when he took the Celtic job so Ally has now got to impose his own managerial style on the clu, starting now. As regards friendship it can work against you as well and i feel that there is too much of the old pals act in tne background staff with John Brown,Neil Murray and Durrant. McCoist has still got time on his hands but he has got to be his own man.

After defeat to Maribor, three points against his old buddy McCall at Motherwell are a must or the pressure will mount for the cheeky chappy.

In the long run though Jim Jeffries might be a good manager for Rangers although I dont think the Rangers fans would like him as the replacement when McCoist is removed.

Never mind Europe if they don't win the league this season it won't be looking to safe for him.

Obviously not gramps. He enetered Europe with players mostly made up of failed Tony Mowbray signings. McCoist still has the spine of the side that has won 3 championships and his own signings added. Lennon had to get rid of the crap he was left with and completely change the personel in a hurry. He then went on to narrowly miss out on the league in his first full season in charge against arguably Rangers greatest ever manager by a single point and racking up an impressive 92 points total while also winning The Scottish Cup.
