You can, if you wish, get the new timeline feature before it goes public. There is a developer version which, as the name suggests, isn't quite 100% yet but should be soon. From what I gather, if you use the developer version of timeline now, only yourself and others will see the new layout while everyone else will need to wait until it is rolled out publicly.
If you are interested then go through these steps.. http://techcrunch.co...ebook-timeline/
On a side note, I'm not sure what will happen to fan pages or groups. They haven't changed since the recent updates and I'm not sure if they will fit in with the timeline layout as neatly as single users do.

Didn't bebo go down the timeline route right near the end? Obviously not as well implemented as that though.

Facebook groups are pointless. They've always been terribly implemented and pointless imo.

It's all down to how you use them. A perfect example are those 30 day question things that were going round. You know the thing, on the first day you choose a film/book/tune/whatever that makes you happy and you post some text and a link, the next day you choose a film/book/tune/whatever that makes you sad, etc, etc..
Putting one of those in a group and having people join the group to post is far (far, far) better than having it posted direct into people's status as all that does is clutter up everyone else's streams.

The fan page is, however, a much cleaner way of using facebook which cuts out all the gunk completely, so long as you don't mind calling all your friends fans.
The fan page, and it's taken a while to get to where it is, is definitely a good idea. For example the facebook stuff for my travels are in a Fan page. It means people don't get spammed by it's updates unless you specifically 'like' that page. In the end it allows me to have friends who are my facebook friends and like my journey page, but also people who aren't my friends liking the page on it's own, and friends who haven't liked the fan page.
I shouldn't really call it a fan page, FB renamed these things to Community Pages, which sets it a little out of the stalker/celebrity setup a fan page sounds like.

Been having a wee swatch at FB new timeline feature
It looks fantastic and is IMO a very good upgrade from the current set up but it only seems like a small piece of the puzzle.
When Im on FB I am rarely on peoples profile page - I check out the news feed and some groups etc
This new layout may modify the way I view facebook - visting each person timeline rather than scouring through the news feed.
There is also the issue of the look of the interface - the new timeline looks a like a shiny new toy and in turn it makes the news feed look very dated
Of course this is all just the aesthetics of the site the real issues will come when it starts logging every single mundane activity

I think its interesting the new timeline, but its a completely different way of doing things. Bebo did actually have an implementation of this way back in 2007, but it obviously wasn't nearly as nice as that. Its not of much relevance to me though, because thats not the way I use facebook.

I find the groups really useful on Facebook - they're not planning on getting rid are they?

Anyone seen the new Facebook page layout? It's absolutely howling, I'm glad I set up Twitter recently.

It's not that bad. I have a particular dislike for Facebook anyway, but at least it's something a little less dull to look at.

I don't mind it - the timeline is pretty good. It's a bit crowded but you can customise it to remove stuff.

I've had it for a few months now and I like it.
