I read on the SouthernReporter that new 3g pitches may be getting installed at Netherdale if the council agree to funding?
Can anyone from Gala give more info on this.

3G is the way forward unless it snows. Its practical as most have found out in terms of training.

Without turning another thread too spartans it's rumoured theyre changing their grass pitch to 3G also. Tranent in juniors doing it too.

I think most clubs should consider it if it's affordable.. 3G pitches would also generate revenue for clubs if the pitches were hired out.
Next to no maintenance is needed and it would also give winter games a better chance of going ahead!!

Last I heard, the 3G in Tranent was going behind Foresters - not on it.

if Tranent's anything to go by the pitch will be laid down, rolled up by neds the next day and sold for a couple of bottles of buckie and a wrap of supposed smack which turns out to be an OXO cube.

Don't these pitches need time to bed down though? The Fairies may have to find alternative accomodation for some months..

The Gala one will be the 1st (hopefully not the last) in the Borders and I am sure will be used a great deal as long as the pricing is right. There could be a hell of a waiting list to get on it judging by the lack of other winter facilities available at present. I also hope the maintenance is keep up as the other astro surfaces and equipment in the area have suffered due to neglect and of course vandalism.
It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye.

The 3G surface would'nt need as much maintenance as grass pitches would. With everything there is Pros and Cons but IMO the Pros outweigh the Cons.
Surely these parks would improve the standard of football also?

I hope this catches on over the years. .

It's only my opinion but surely there's loads of guys who hate playing on it and would much rather play on grass.

does anyone know, roughly, how much it costs to install a 3g pitch? not the fencing etc just the actual surface.

Played on the one at meggetland in Edinburgh the other day. its newer than 3g and brilliant to play on but several of the team have really really bad burns all over their legs and playing on it over a season would be a complete and utter nightmare.

I think it is between £200-£400k I think it depends on 3g or 4g, what equipment comes with it etc.

We play our home games at saughton 3g and its great.

I do prefer a good grass pitch but how many of them are about now? As an amateur team based in Edinburgh I cant recall playing on 1 good grass pitch apart from Peffermill back in August 2010.

we use Poltonhall 3g in Bonnyrigg. Its superb. But the Meggetland one is dif, burns a lot more!

The one at Poltonhall is booked solid and costs £95 PER GAME. £45 for 90 minutes training.

What chance have the amateurs got when most of the Junior and Senior pitches are awful, we are bottom of the pile! Even Peffermill when we played on it before xmas wasnt up to much.

By far the worst football pitch in the whole country is the one in Liberton. If you take a corner from the end furthest from the changing rooms you actually cannot see the penalty box because of the slope. And thats not an exaggeration!

With the facility now due to open around early December... welcome I'm sure should a cold spell come... here's some pictures of the new facility taking shape, taken from the full photo-diary located at:

(Don't quote this post if replying, btw, else the thread will end-up full of repeats and take ages to load/get very long).

What are the yellow markings? They don't look like your 'pitch split into 3' for training type markings.

Rugby. The 7-a-side markings are done in blue.

Will the SFA allow games with these markings? Major distraction!

I'd imagine the pitch will be SFA approved. It may look confusing in pictures but once you get down and play on it is fine. No confusion at all.

The reason why the lines are done in white and yellow I would imagine.

Do any of the town's egg-chasing outfits intend using it for competitive matches sometimes, or just for training?

Gala RFC have a fully undersoiled heated pitch next door to Fairydean so I would doubt if they would be using the pitch, not sure about the 2nds etc.

Can you do egg chasing on a 3G pitch? I would have thought that full body armour would be needed or do these pitches don't burn? Have any matches taken place elsewhere?

I can see training taking place but not a match.

Yes. As long as it is an IRB standard pitch. These surfaces are not rough to play on.

Cheers, I just remember skint knees from playing on plastic pitches a few years ago.

Am I right in thinking that Hawick are training on this surface already?
Reason I am asking is because the Gala vs Easthouses game was switched to Easthouses because the ground was deemed not ready. Are they still waiting for approval?

No one is training on this surface yet and they are waiting on three or two dry days in a row to finish it off.
