Unless it's the 1920s Third Division trophy re-used for the Second Division from 1974, then it's the 1994 one, and the 1974/older one was retired.

Was a trophy actually awarded for the 1920s Third Division? I'd thought that the SFL's trepidation towards the Division would have prevent them purchasing one. The subsequent Provincial League actually used the old Western League Cup as its championship trophy.

One of these weird coincidences, but I was flicking through a Berwick Rangers book earlier - the back page is a close-up of the trophy from 2006-07, when we won the Third Division. It reads "Scottish Football League Instituted 1890 Third Division Championship" on the face.

Unless it's the 1920s Third Division trophy re-used for the Second Division from 1974, then it's the 1994 one, and the 1974/older one was retired.

I remember when we won the 3rd division in 2006 I got my picture taken with the trophy and from what I can remember i'm sure that it dates from 1994-95 season.

The current first division trophy has rangers and celtic inscribed on it many times, so that answers that one.

Is it a replica or original though?

As mentioned earlier I emailed the SFL just got this back from them re their championship trophies.

Firstly, you have to go back to season 1975/76 when The Scottish Football League was reconstructed from two divisions, ie., First and Second Divisions, to three Divisions, i.e, Premier, First and Second Divisions. At that point, the First Division Championship trophy was then used for the Premier Division Championship, (even although the trophy is inscribed First Division Championship), the Second Division Championship trophy was then used for the First Division Championship, (even although the trophy is inscribed Second Division Championship) and a new Third Division Championship trophy was purchased.

Secondly, when The Scottish Football League was reconstructed into four divisions of ten clubs each in season 1994/95, a new Third Division trophy was purchased to reflect the new set-up.

Thirdly, at the end of season 1997/98, you will recall that the Premier Division clubs of the SFL broke away to form The Scottish Premier League and with effect from season 1998/99 onwards, the SFL have operated three divisions of 10 clubs each. As a result, the trophy that was used for the Premier Division Championship but as previously detailed is inscribed "First Division Championship" is now presented to the winners of the current First Division Championship. The trophy that was used for the First Division Championship which as previously detailed is inscribed "Second Division Championship" is presented to the winners of the current Second Division Championship. The trophy that was used for the winners of the Second Division Championship up to and including season 1997/98 was discontinued with the Third Division Championship trophy that has been used since season 1994/95 still being presented to the winners of the current Third Division Championship.

I trust that this information has helped to explain the situation regarding the trophies in recent seasons however, if you still wish any clarification, please do not hesitate to give David Thomson a call.

I also attach a copy of the three Championship trophies which are in use today for your information.

Kind regards,
