The Alec Lucas Memorial Tournament (7 a-side) is taking place in Peebles this Saturday - kicking off at 11:20.

It's in its second year, honouring Alec who was a Royal Marine and died in Afghanistan in 2008.

Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone fancied popping along - it was a great day last year.

There's a mix of local EOS and amateur squads, sides from two local pubs, three Royal Marine teams, guests from England and an All Star side, featuring Gary Mackay, John Collins, Darren Jackson and Dave Bowman.

Anyway, groups have been now been drawn:

Group A.........

All Stars, Royal Marines B, Peebles FC, Neidpath

Group B........

Peebles Ams, Linton Hotspur, Crown A, Southern Softies

Group C.......

Leithen Rovers, Tweeddale Rovers, Fleet Protection, Crown B

Group D.......

Vale of Leithen, Penicuik Ams, Chester, Royal Marines A

Can someone answer a query of mine on this... is the trophy awarded the old Dudley Cup - as was stated by the Peebleshire News last year, IIRC?

I don't think so - I'm sure two new trophies were created for the winners and runners-up.

leithen rovers won the peebles sevens in a repeat of last years final, the final was cut short because of a bad injury to one of the marines,as leithen were winning at the time they were awarded the win.It was a great day for every one involved and some great football played by all who took part. The Alec lucas memorial football tournament is a great day for all the family and i hope they have made lots of money for the charities they are helping.all the best for years to come

Well done to Leithen Rovers, always seem to do well in 7's tournaments due to the pace in the squad. It was a great afternoon yesterday despite the rain towards the end of the day. Nice to see a big turn-out and the all-star team - Scott Crabbe, Gary Mackay, Dave Bowman, Jamie McCunnie, David Hannah, Eddie Mearns and Darren Jackson (who was brilliant against Peebles!) in action.

Hope the Marine's injury isnt too bad!

Aye the marine got a really bad one. Hope he is ok. Dislocated knee in the final which I got sight off - not nice. Sad way to end a great tournament.

Leithen Rovers scored 6 goals in the whole tournament(6 games) and only conceeded one. Some might say it was anti-football, but keeping the ball is part of the game! I think the marine team never touched the ball for around 4 mintes in the semi final. Great day and just to be involved was special!

By all accounts, it was a very successful day and lots of money raised.
