Through this forum i would like to show my appreciation for one of the borders prolific goalscorers!
Its my understanding that Gary Hastie will hang up his boots at the end of this season, with leithen playing their last league game on thursday how fitting that gary's last game could be against Gala Rovers on saturday in the bevridge cup semi, although i'm sure Gary would prefer it to be the final lifting the cup for the fourth time to go with his 5 divA league medals, 3 Border cup,3 waddle cup and 1 South Cup medals. Gary has probably finished top goalscorer every season scoring 297 goals in his border amatuer career, playing for Gala Hotspur,Leithen Rovers and his much loved Gala Rovers where he was part of the side that won all 22 league games scoring a remarkable 52 goals that season.
Like him or Hate him he is arguably the best finisher the league has seen in the last 15 year or so, I hope he manages to get his 3 goals to take his already impressive total to 300 and wish him all the best outside the game. Its just a shame he never played for Stow. Good Luck Gary

Are you his ghost writer?Posted Image

Yip, I've had many a ball whistle past my ears, then the dreaded net ripple courtesy of Mr Hastie, am sure he could drop a league and still score at his leisure. Posted Image

Good luck to him....would say he is getting a bit over the hill nowadays anyway.....Posted Image I've been friends with Gary since we went through High school together and there is no doubt he is a cracking player but i think there could be plenty of people who would say that there have been better finishers over the last 15 years.

Happy retirement bud.

Good luck to him Posted Image . Always thought the rest of his game was average but no doubt a very good finisher even if I did think he needed plenty of chances first...

Can't argue with that record though and though past his best, Leithen will still miss him.

We did try about 14 years ago! Could Leithen's loss be Newtown's gainPosted Image ? There is no doubting he can score for fun and usually did. If he is hanging up his boots they will be hard ones to fill! He is the modern day Robbie Middlemas anyone remember Mid?
It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye.

Dont believe he is past his best, would still walk into any top amateur side in the borders! His commitment and attitude is second to none, that coupled with his finishing and aeriel presence - he could well be one of the best players to have graced the borders game!
I certainly know that the pretender to his throne has learned a heck of a lot from Mr Hastie, but remember he has not actually confirmed he will be calling it a day, he has merely indicated!!

Think hastie is a good goal scorer in the BAL but stevie was a class above most in the BA for years and hardly ever scored a tap in and ran defences ragged at the same time. Im sure he scored about 40 odd goals the year Rhymers won the A division as well.

Stevie kerr couldn't lace Gary hadties boots in terms of goals scored.. Doesn't matter how they go in, tap in or not they all count the same, Gary has that knack of right place right time. I've played with and against both players and for me Gary edges it for popping up with a goal not only when you need it but crucial strikes. Granted he's a kris Boyd for work rate but he's a henrik larsdon fir goals scored.. Thought you'd like that comparison Gary..

Quite agree there. So if Leithen lose their top scorer that will leave them shy for next season or are they already recruiting? Surely they cant lose a top player and expect big things for next year??

Hastie is not our top scorer, nor was he last year. He has still banged in excess of 20 goals in each of the seasons, but speedy has scored 68 goals in the last 2 seasons. Granted we do need a replacement, and it will be hard to replace a man of hasties calibre, but we already have young arron brunton and tosh fleming who can both play up there. We also have young steven fleming.

Maybe not expecting big things, but we will hopefully be in the mix! We have a few players in the pipeline, so watch this space.....

All I can say is there are a few players being looked at! So as I say, watch this space! If the players we are after do come in, watch out!
