I'm a fisherman pal, not been out at all but have been invited to try a local loch some time this week. The temperatures are getting to where they need to be for the insect life to start moving again but i've heard horror stories of new stockies hunting in packs like piranhas!

Certainly does not require a thread of it's own, especially not in the 'other SPORTS' section.

Hopefully going up to Butterstone loch at the end of the month.
If you are ever going to fish the Carron near Denny, make sure you have your permit. The Baillifs are a b*****d and will have no hesitation in calling the Police if you don't pack in when instructed to do so.

Have you ever tried fishing at Wellsfield farm just outside Dunipace? Cracking wee place up there to fish. I'm looking to take up fishing at some point over next year and aim to get a couple lessons soon

Thats were I learned to fly fish. You can get a cracking starter outfit for around £50. Don't pay for lessons. Overpriced and they make your session very expensive. There are loads of fisheries around the area.
Give me a shout when you fancy going and I will give you a wee hand getting started.
Went onto the Carron for a wee while yesterday but no luck. A couple of wee knocks but that was it.

There are loads of fisheries in Ayrshire. My tip is get one of the flyfishing mags. Look up the reports (usually near the back) and take note of the ones near you. An decent one will give you help and advice.

Tried fishing when I was younger (like 10) but my dad didn't have my time for it back then
Looking to start again and was wondering if it's any good, don't want to spend a week fishing the carron and catching nothing, it would kind of put me off
Gonna get my pal to take me out first anyway

I've heard the reservoir itself is top notch fishing but haven't tried it myself. Might be boat only though so it would make sense to go with someone more experienced both from a tactical and safety point of view. Won't be cheap either I suspect.

It's good for starting on, but wait till the river is in spate. Then you have more chance of catching. Only £7 for the day or £42 fot the season. This includes your right to fish for salmon (late season). Don't buy any gear until you think you might stick it. Best bet borrow some stuff and go.

The Carron Valley Reservoir is indeed top fishing but not too expensive. It is only bot fishing but worth it. Cracking Rainbow's and Brown's in it as well as a species of fish called a powen. Linky here http://www.sfca.co.u...out/sppowan.htm
All safety equipment is provided but use common sense and you will be fine.

Wait until after a heavy day or so of rain, then when the water levels start to drop, fish it then.
Also when the temp warms up a bit, natural fly life/hatches occur and therefore more natural feeding for the fish. Great fun catching them that way.
I will pm you when i think it would be best for you to try it.

I'm heading up to a wee hill-loch I am lucky enough to have access to, in the hills behind Aberfeldy, at some point this week.
