Dundee United's on-loan defender Andy Webster insists he wants another crack at becoming a first-team regular at Rangers when he returns in the summer.

The former Hearts centre-half recently made a return to the international stage after a four-year exile as he continues to impress in the Terrors' defence.

Last week, Gers boss Walter Smith expressed his desire to see Webster in a Gers shirt next season and Webster has told skysports.com that he still has unfinished business at Ibrox.

"The deal is still, and always has been, for me to go out on loan for the season and then return to Rangers in the summer," explained Webster.

"As far as I am aware that is still the plan and as much as I've enjoyed my time here I'd like another crack at playing for Rangers.

"I have shown what I can bring to the table while at Dundee United and hopefully I will impress during pre-season back at Rangers and earn a place in the side there for next season."

I dont Smith rates him, he obviously knew he was going to be short of players at the start of season so why did he let him go out on loan (even if he was lacking match fitness)?

What a thick c**t Webster must be
Rangers have ruined his career and shafted him and he wants to go back for more.
Rangers werent willing to give him a chance before now so maybe now he is playing well he should repay the chance dundee utd gave him when no one else would touch him.

The completely obvious has been stated, yawn.
"Dundee United's fans arguably the best in Scottish football: good-humoured, fun, love their team."

maybe walter smith knew he would be wasted on the bench at rangers so he gave him to dundee utd for a year to get him back to his best. he will be a ready made replacement for weir and it looks like wilson will replace bougherra at centre back although it looks like a lack of experience at the back which could be costly to us

He's a Gers player and wants to play there. Most Scottish players would love to play for either of the In-firm if they are honest.

He has done well at United but unless he is released by Rangers (very unlikely) he will not be moving. I suspect that Rangers have continued to pay some of his wages so that alone could prevent him becomg a permanent United player as he could get far more in the Championship or the lower reaches of the EPL or Div 1 and 2 if you believe Mr Magoo!

Most Arabs will wish him well. He would appear to have put his injuries and troubles behind him and deserves to do well for club and more importantly for country.

It makes more sense what Smith did with Webster than what Celtic did with Riordan. If you're not going to use a player you own, but think you may need him in the future and think it would be better for the player's development to get first team football somewhere else, the best scenario for all 3 parties is a loan deal. Rangers still own him, Utd have a very promising and talented defender, and the player is getting first team football whilst attempting to show his owners that he's good enough for a return. I don't see the problem, personally.

Well with Bougherra wanting to stay & Weir more than likely getting a new deal will he be given a chance?

     Unless Cath has dipped into her pension fund again, Webster's wages have been, what, 90%, covered by Rangers.

Which is not a bad deal for us, eh? Webster is one of the few loan players I would have wanted to keep along with Willo Flood and Warren Feeney. Most of the others have been gash e.g O' Brien, Caddis, O' Donovan.

I would be surprised to see both Bougherra and Weir together at Ibox again next season. Webster has looked pretty good at United and certainly deserves a chance to revive his Rangers career. Wilson is 1 for the future but i would not want to go into the season with him as a first choice centre back

Fantastic deal for you guys, no doubt about it. A bit of reality check required though, neither Webster nor Flood would have stayed at United, the money just isn't there. These players want to win trophies, or make top dollar, both a hard ask at United.

There are not many Arabs complaining at what United have achieved with the 7th or 8th highest resourced squad in the SPL. It is a credit to the club that these players are more than happy to come to us and showcase their talents in order to get a move to a bigger club (or in Webster's case get a first team place at Rangers.) Webster has got his place back in the national side as a result of coming to United so it would appear that we are considered to be a good option. I reckon we will be looking for at least one loan signing again next season.

It works for other clubs too such as Motherwell because there is no doubt that Ruddy and Jutkiewicz have benefitted themselves and the club.

Please take Kyle Lafferty next season...I am sure Rangers will pay you 100% of his wages plus a fee ;)

I think you're having a Laff. If Wilson is out the frame next season, he may be looking for a loan gig. I would suggest that we need options across the back four as opposed to midfielders and strikers.

I would swap Scotland U21 Ross Perry for your Scotland U21 David Goodwillie ;)

Why Smith thinks it's good to play Weir in front of Andy Webster is beyond me. I don't like him but he is probably the best Scottish centre back and one of if not the best centre back in Scotland.

"I remember all of them, and every single one was a deliberate stab through the heart of Hibernian Football Club. Nothing against the fans but you lot have to understand that when Hibs didn't sign me, I wanted revenge. Some folk laugh at that and say: ‘What, all 27?' I suppose maybe 25 were punishment; the other two I banged in just for the hell of it."

Webster was barely fit 2 games in a row over the last 2 years at Rangers. He was farmed out on loan to get him match fitness and practise. It wasn't a case of being good enough. We used Webster over the past few yearts but when he played, he invariabley got injured, by sending him to Dundee Utd, if he played a few good games, got injured, it wouldn't affect our options this season. Now after a full season under his belt, it should be like a new signing next season, as we've never had a fully fit Webster at our disposal, shrewd bit of business by Smith, as he would never have got the run of games at Ibrox, and reserve football would have done him no good.

Errrm, he can't recall Webster early. Some of the garbage on this thread is amazing, especially the bit about Rangers "ruining his career". Walter Smith is like magic pixie dust for centre halves.

No matter how well Webster does, it won't make up for his lack of a soul. His leg's made of lollipop sticks, and I hope that it disintegrates.
Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.
