Once more AM has went back to Hamilton to sort out an emergency loan.

This time it's 21 year old Right Back Tony Stevenson.

I thought Tony Stevenson was pretty good for us when he came in on loan a few years ago with Paul McLeod. Obviously his career hasn't progressed as he would have liked, it always seemed likely that a lack of pace would ensure that he'd struggle in the SPL/top of division 1, but he should be a pretty competent player at this level. As I recall he has got a good delivery from set-pieces so that should be a further boost for us.

Aye, he was always renowned for his dead ball capabilities. Free kicks, corners, penalties et al. Didn't really show any of that in his loan spell at us, despite scoring a couple of dead balls against us for Hamilton the previous season when they won the league. He also scored a penalty against us in the CIS Cup in their first season in the SPL.

I was quite pleased when I heard about him coming to us to the end of the season, but he ended up a major disappointment. Maybe he'll get away with his lack of pace a tad more than he did in division one.

The minute "set-piece specialist" gets mentioned, you know the guy has no pace or any outstanding abilities.

He's not bad on the ball actually - his best game for us maybe came as a defensive midfielder (a match we ended up losing 4-1 though!).

Yeah, I'm sure the bottom team in our league has far better defenders.

Anyway, like Dink I thought he was excellant in his loan spell with us a few years ago. Even if he hasnt progressed from then he is still better than us having no right back at all.

I never said that. I said that as a footballer he is rank rotten. Fat, slow and talentless, apart from a few free kicks. Maybe this division will be kinder to him, but I doubt it

Even when Billy Reid wasn't even in the same division as us he still found a way to screw us over

Hopefully playing in the second division rather than the first, for a team that is winning games rather than losing, and being managed by Alan Maitland rather than John Brown will all combine to make Tony Stevenson more of a success for us than he was for Clyde. I like to maintain my optimistic outlook regarding players' abilities until I witness for myself just how dogshit they are, indeed I quite often maintain it for weeks afterwards - believing that players will come good.

I probably don't want to dwell on my ratio of being disappointed to being vindicated (although I did get to spend much of Saturday afternoon pointing at my brother and shouting "It's Gormley time!" like some sort of deranged lunatic).

See the weird thing, our defence is pretty sound. Our current 4 defenders certainly offer more than Stevenson did.

I believe Sao Paulo started his new job today, so we'll have to wait until tomorrow to hear that from a coniferous point of view he was actually horticulturally sufficient

So the defenders you have just now are worse than him?

You do know that there is a world of difference between playing in the first and second divisions, right? As for fat, slow talentless footballers I suppose Clyde fans will be the experts in judging.

All I know is that he played very well on loan to us a while ago. Anyhting similar will do me fine.

No. I wouldn't take Tony Stevenson over Ally Park or Willie McLachlan, and that's saying something

I believe Stevenson was an important player in the Hamilton side which won promotion to the SPL the season before last. As such it is difficult to believe he won't do a job for us in division 2. IIRC he actually started for Accies in their first couple of games in the SPL before being found out for pace. Can fill in at right back and also a good enough footballer to play midfield IMO.

I will take the Clyde fans opinions of him with a pinch of salt. Posted Image

Talking about Hamilton full backs, any more news on Welsh and whether he is still with us or been released?

Fine, but don't say you weren't warned when you finish the season in 8th place!

Twilight shift.

I don't suppose there are many players in the second division whom you could say were technically superior to Stevenson. Although, at the same time, I'm struggling to think of any that could be described as less mobile.

Perhaps he's shifted the weight and heightened his fitness since being with Clyde? I don't know.

I cannot envisage Maitland using him in the middle of the park, myself. As a full back, more likely. Alloa wouldn't want too much (defensive) responsibility to fall on him. Very timid and lethargic. Potentially a good team player with an excellent work-rate. It all hinges on fitness.
"By calling him humourless I mean to impugn his seriousness" (Martin Amis).

"If you don’t think you have the blues, just keep living" (Buddy Guy).

You cant blame the Clyde fans for having a go, they had to take enough of it when they signed ex Alloa donkeys Coakley and McLeod. We've had Stevenson before though and he did a very good job for us. His fitness must be questionable given his lack of game time but if he can get close to the form he showed at the Recs before he will be a good addition. We have 7 or 8 players out at the moment so somebody who can offer cover at full-back and midfield is a welcome addition.

Does this mean McClune is out for a while then or will he try stevenson out of position at left back  i liked tony last time he was at the recs and he didnt seem fat then so he must have ate himself into a depressed state at the thought of joining clyde with that donkey in charge. Hope this works well AM has the capabilities to get the best out of players that others have said were rank and i also take clyde fans comments with a pinch of salt after what they said about Mark Brown who has been 1 of our best players this season at centreback or centre mid.

Fair point. I've barely got over the trauma of seeing them play for us.

There is no way on earth Stevenson can be anywhere near as disasterous as these two.

I love it when a team signs a new player, all their fans try to talk it up but Stevenson was shocking for us

We have established he was poor for Clyde. We also know he was very good for Alloa in a previous spell. Alloa fans are not trying to talk him up, we're just saying if he can show his previous form again then he will be a good addition. Nice and simple.
